Unjust Penalty is a Raid Event scheduled to start on June 1, 2021 at 8:00 PM (PDT/PST) and end on June 7, 2021 at 8:00 PM (PDT/PST). It is the one hundred twenty fifth episode of the Dark Stigma story and sixty third in the Malice Canon storyline.

Prologue

The throne, crown, and cape of Ereal's monarch were all made of intricately crafted gold, extracted from the local mines and created by local artisans. However, the one currently surrounded by dazzling accoutrements and obedient ministers was not the true king, but you. With the slight adjustments that added gravitas to your face, the uninitiated would surely be fooled. As for why the charade was necessary, that too could be traced back to the nation's prime product: gold.

Ereal was small but famed for its many gold mines. This wealth was enjoyed by the nobility and the public alike. For ages, the nation was lauded in song as a land of dreams and fortune. This was until that seemingly endless supply of gold exhausted itself seven years ago, starting a tragic turn of events.

The miners quickly sought work elsewhere. This also left the metallurgists who could not move their workshops idle. Adding to the kingdom's descent into destitution, there was not enough money to pay the hired mercenaries that comprised the majority of the royal army. This meant it was impossible to prevent the monsters from spilling out of the recently abandoned mines and into the towns. Ereal was doomed if nothing was done, and so the desperate king called upon a last resort.

There was a goddess named Yajura who was said to answer any desire. She was native to the area and had even aided the development of the mines according to folklore. However, her blessings could hardly be called such for they came with a steep cost. Seven years later, the supplicant would have to give her their very life.

The king of Ereal placed a parchment bearing his prayer and the royal seal into the lake where Yajura's soul purportedly resided. His specific request was to receive the military might to drive the monsters back into the mines. Of course, he was fully aware of the eventual consequences, but there were lingering doubts she even existed.

The next dawn, hundreds of strong warriors appeared before the castle. All were wandering exiles from nearby lands that now declared loyalty to Ereal as they set out to exterminate the monsters. Peace had been provided just as the king requested. Afterwards, when he asked why they had come, he was shocked to hear the same reply from every last one: the previous night, they saw a goddess in a dream who said if they amended their ways and protected the country, they would be given a new place to belong.

And the country was willing to do just that. Those warriors were hired as combat instructors by a populace worried about future monster attacks, and the metalworkers found a new market in crafting and decorating weapons. This was the footing Ereal needed to fix its economy.

Despite their return to prosperity, a grim shadow loomed over seven years that followed. If the legend about Yagura were true, she would send an emissary to collect the life of the king in return for saving the nation. However, the thought of losing a leader brave enough to take such a risk in the face of total collapse was unbearable.

It just so happened you were passing through the country several days before the deadline. Hearing of this, the ministers consulted with you about a way to save their liege's life. You suggested serving as a body double to fool the goddess' emissary. Though they were opposed at first, the fervor in your eyes ultimately convinced them.

At last, the fated hour had come. Silence weighed heavy over the throne room as everyone held their breath in anticipation. Suddenly, the door opened with a faint creak under its own gold-wrought heft. There stood a woman adorned in black armor, and she spoke in a solemn tone for all to hear:

"I am Alandine, humble servant of Yajura. Ruler of Ereal, surely you have not forgotten your pledge. Accept your imminent death or suffer a greater punishment!"

She then forcefully drew her sword, demonstrating no mercy would be spared. You had hoped for a chance to negotiate, but if she wanted to fight, you would retaliate with the whole of your strength.

Epilogue

The fierce battle against Alandine came to a sudden pause when she shot a piercing glare at your upraised sword.

"Your weapon lacks the brilliance of Erealean gold. I see now you are not the true king." You froze with surprise, and she took that opportunity to press her sword tip into your throat. She stared into your eyes for several silent moments, then, even more surprisingly, lowered her blade with a smile.

"If you wish to spare the king from his fate, swear loyalty to Yajura here and now. You only need to fight unwaveringly for the sake of your beliefs until the end of your life, when it will become hers. Do you agree?" The sudden development and the phrasing of her words prompted a reflexive nod. You were agreeing with the idea of fighting bravely rather than professing allegiance to her goddess, but it was too late. That she presented you such an advantageous offer despite your actions added to the confusion. The terms were not as strict as the king's; you had already sworn to uphold justice with your life, and whatever became of you after your death was of no concern. Perhaps noticing your wonderment, Alandine spoke again.

"Long ago, there was a woman who accepted that same arrangement. She had a younger brother who desired above all to become a knight. He joined the army as an apprentice, but it was soon apparent he held no capacity for battle. Refusing to abandon his dream, he prayed that Yajura would grant him strength, fully aware he would die in seven years."

"The end of that seventh year saw him coming to his sister in tears. His resolution had faltered, and he now feared the goddess coming to collect her dues. Seeing his miserable state, she decided to wear his black armor and offer her life in his place, just as you did for the king."

"However, Yajura immediate saw through the charade. She told her that if she wanted to save her brother, she would do just as I told you earlier. Moved by her grace, she not only agreed, she chose to fight in the goddess' service. In return, Yajura gave her eternal life until she could fulfill her promise."

It was clear Alandine was telling you the story of herself. She was, at her core, one who would not hesitate to sacrifice her life for justice. Even so, as satisfied as you were to have saved the king of Ereal, you asked why Yajura would allow her servant to make such an important decision. To that, she replied with a laugh:

"The people of this country think her cruel, but if they knew her as I do, they would think differently." She then turned around and walked away, back to the master to whom she had sworn eternal devotion, the ruthless goddess of Ereal, Yajura.
