Prologue

Your head pounded relentlessly. Biting chill cut to the bone. Frigid air tortured your lungs. White mist clouded your vision. But you, Elimval, and Salvador sprinted across the snowy plain with unflagging determination. Without immediate action, tragedy would strike an entire city.

At last, a huge, wavering shadow came into view. It was a legion of innumerable monsters, spreading a thick miasma and enlarging with every stride. Snow apes with sharp claws, demons with icy hides, all manner of dragons, and dark fairies howled, buzzed, and gnashed their fangs. Yet for all their diversity, they moved and acted as a single unit. Rage both united and spurred the hideous mass into a headlong charge towards their destination -- Stedin, a city glistening in the frost, and the one who ruled it from a silver castle, Roche.

As a stranger to the region, you were unaware of this crisis until saving a collapsed merchant. After being resuscitated, he told you a horde of monsters passed by, obsessively grunting Roche's name. Their aggression was aimed at her and likely Stedin as well, for he had only fainted from their choking miasma rather than a direct attack. When he mentioned many of his relatives lived there, you agreed to do whatever possible to help.

What the merchant could not tell you was the reason for their zealous hatred of Roche. She had erected a magical barrier to prevent monsters from entering Stedin and trained her soldiers to destroy anything that managed to clear it, but otherwise she did nothing of note to deserve such wrath. Regardless of motive, they could not be allowed to reach the city. You gave chase and prepared for a battle to the death.

The gap between you and the monsters closed as Stedin drew near. This was when, to your astonishment, Roche herself appeared before you. Mounted on a white horse, her fiery locks waved elegantly in the wind. Then, she said in a stern, regal voice:

"Unfamiliar travelers, your noble intent is clear. However, I have my own plans, and I will not allow anyone to interfere. In deference to your consideration, I grant you the chance to retreat. Refuse, and you share the same fate as these vermin!"

With a glare as cold and merciless as the weather, she left. As she did, she even taunted the monsters already ravenous for her blood. Though they could not hope to catch her steed, they were obviously drawn towards Stedin. It seemed a fierce clash was inevitable, and you were determined to learn the purpose of her unusual behavior.

Epilogue

"Unfamiliar travelers, your noble intent is clear. However, I have my own plans, and I will not allow anyone to interfere. In deference to your consideration, I grant you the chance to retreat. Refuse, and you share the same fate as these vermin!"

Thus said Roche of Stedin during your first confrontation. However, her icy threat did not dissuade you from pursuing the throng of monsters that charged towards her city. You believed if nothing was done, they would wreak untold havoc upon its populace. True to her word, she returned to attack after noticing your interference. This meant you needed to contend with the monsters, Roche, and the Lightholders simultaneously.

The merchant you rescued earlier had told you of her excellence in martial and magical arts. You also learned that though she despised monsters, she loved peace and simply wanted to safeguard her beloved people and son. However, this seemed to fly in the face of the reality that Stedin was utterly deserted. The city's only representative was Roche, maneuvering her white horse as if herding the monstrous horde.

As you approached the center of the city, the monsters' building rage forced the Lightholders to withdraw amidst their black miasma. Despite the castle's gleaming beauty, the stench of blood was thick in the air. While you were preoccupied with notions that it was a trap of some kind, a monster managed to sneak up behind you. You turned around to see it poised to strike... before suddenly vanishing. In its stead, you were accosted by a great bellow.

"Did I not tell you to leave?!" You looked over and saw Roche repositioning her weapon after slaying the creature. She had dismounted in order to save you from harm.

"I truly do not wish for you to die here." Monsters were crowding into the castle, but Roche stood as if to obstruct you from doing the same.

"Listen close: I have set a trap inside using the corpses of their foul kind." The look in her eyes could cause frostbite.

"They killed the prince -- my son -- when he went out hunting one night. He was ambushed and they devoured him, leaving just a handful of bones and his sword. The blame is entirely mine, for I passively kept them out of my domain instead of actively thinning their numbers."

She had evacuated all of Stedin and created a deadly magic circle within her castle. A mountain of monster remains now lured them in droves, allowing her to kill them in one fell swoop.

"This is the only choice I can take. Otherwise..." As she finished speaking, she turned to follow the monsters into the castle. The heavy doors slammed shut, and there was a great tremor. A blinding flash engulfed the area. The frozen ground began to crack. When the light and noise subsided, all that remained was blackened ground.

"Otherwise, I will become a monster myself. I already feel hatred twisting my soul. Rather than cause suffering to my subjects, I ordered them to leave so I could send myself, the castle, and these horrible abominations to the pits of Hades where we belong..."

In the eerie silence, her final speech echoed over and over in your mind, never fading...
