Prologue[]
Joramm was a kingdom consisting of several plateaus rising above spotted forests and wilderness. In contrast to the inhospitable lower lands, the upper level was populated with thriving cities. facilitated by large bridges. These were constructed by the nation's founder three hundred years ago. According to folklore, each one was built overnight, a feat he attributed to the spell that a master in the mystic arts had taught him. For this, along with his remarkable expertise in wizardry, he was dubbed the Magic King.
You also crossed one of those bridges when you entered the country. Moving along the streets of the capital, you were impressed by the beautiful buildings and bustling markets. It seemed like an ideal location for a ten-day sojourn from your travels. Unfortunately, you were only able to enjoy a handful of them before disaster struck.
A huge commotion just before daybreak roused you from sleep. It seemed that all of the bridges had suddenly collapsed in quick succession. Though the early hour meant there was no traffic caught in the calamity, all of Joramm was left paralyzed. Flying dragons were gathered to handle the urgent transport of people and goods, but there were not enough to meet demand. The bridges needed to be rebuilt at once.
The key to this was believed to be written on the pages of the Magic King's Journal, preserved in the royal library. It was considered one of Joramm's most valuable books and thus never allowed to leave the premises. He carried it everywhere all throughout his life, and he forbade anyone from opening it even after his death.
Future generations obeyed his command out of reverence, so no one knew what it contained. Despite this, there was a high likelihood it held information about the bridge-constructing spell, so the current ruler agreed to make an exception. Yet upon visiting the library, he discovered the old tome was not in its designated position. The royal librarian too was unaware of its whereabouts, and it was not on any other shelf.
Everyone feared the worst. Locating a sorcerer as skilled as the Magic King in short order was nearly impossible. If the Journal was not recovered, there would be no choice but to manually reconstruct the bridges, a painstaking effort that would last decades if not centuries.
Naturally, you were also affected by the delay since it would be months before a dragon could carry you and your allies away from the isolated city. As critical as your journey was, using it to try negotiating a shorter wait could draw undue attention. While mulling an alternative, you overheard a rumor about the Journal's disappearance.
The one responsible was a witch named Lunarc. She rarely left her home in Gloomwood, on the outskirts of the country. However, the royal librarian thought he saw her lurking among the archive's shelves. Hoping to resolve the problem even a moment sooner, you decided to join the search.
Epilogue[]
Lunarc kept the Magic King's Journal tight to her breast throughout your dogged pursuit of her. It seemed that only a life-threatening wound would diminish her resistance, but you thought such violence was unnecessary. Unlike the monsters lurking in the library, she was intent on nothing more than securing the book, and her calm counterattacks were meant to discourage rather than harm. Finally, you decided to try thrusting not your blade, but an upturned palm.
That book likely held the answer to the crisis paralyzing Joramm. If it was precious to her, the country would gladly relinquish it, but only after the bridges were reconstructed. As you informed her of this, a stern look flashed across her face before quickly relaxing into amusement.
"There's nothing written in here about bridges. It's just as it's name suggests: a record of his daily life." She caressed the book's cover. "How much time as passed since we met? He was only a small boy back then. I've always hated humans -- loud, intrusive -- but children are different. He was never afraid of me. In fact, he loved the supernatural, and his pure, honest curiosity meant we soon became friends. He enjoyed watching me practice magic, and he eventually said he wanted to learn it, too. I was hesitant at first, but he convinced me to teach him a few basic spells. Imagine my surprise when he started combining them to make new effects. He was a true prodigy."
This meant that the legendary Magic King's master was none other than her, Lunarc. "And while he was learning magic, he was also bringing together the towns and villages around here. I remember being rather surprised when he told me he founded a kingdom. It was the first time he had asked for my help in years, about making a bridge-building spell of all things. But I wasn't half as shocked as when he later said he wanted me to become his queen."
"Now, I'm not human, as you know, so my lifespan far exceeds his. Besides, I had no idea that carefree little boy was thinking of me in such a way. I turned him down of course, but, persistent as always, he brought his journal, the very one in my hands, and asked me to read it. I was touched but not convinced. It was impossible for me to live with humans, and he very well couldn't live in the forest. He was still a dear friend to me... but I never saw him again after that day."
Lunarc then gave a sad smile. "To reiterate, this is only a journal. It contains no real knowledge. I was simply informed by the wind spirits that a commotion happened in the human city and they were planning to read it, so I hurried to take it before they could. I didn't even know why I was so agitated, but now that I've told you the story, it's obvious. Anyone would be mortified to have romantic messages addressed to them read by another."
You explained the commotion was a result of his bridges collapsing.
"Ah, I see. Yes, it's true the effect of the spell only lasts for three hundred years. I suppose he forgot to tell anyone it needs to be restored, much less how. He was a bit scatterbrained at times." Lunarc snapped her fingers, and there was a great rumbling in the distance. You then heard the people shout and cheer over the din. Incredibly, it seemed she had restored the bridges right before everyone's eyes. For all of the Magic King's talent, his teacher was indeed far more skilled. She spoke again, indifferent to the jubilation outside.
"The bridges linking the plateaus have been returned to how they were. As payment, I'll take his journal for preservation's sake. This means when someone comes to me in search of it three hundred years later, I'll be reminded to rebuild them once more." Leaving that promise, Lunarc returned to her forest home. That someone who hated humans would consent to letting them visit her every three centuries was a greater concession than you imagined. However, seeing her smile as she embraced the book, you remembered certain memories were truly priceless...
