Prologue[]
You had just found lodging at a tavern in a northern town when Ripley approached. Once everyone gathered around the table, he broke news of a serious threat without breaking his sly smile.
"It doesn't look like you believe me. Sure, I might not give the impression this is a major problem, but that's because I'm good at hiding my anxiety. See?" He lifted his hand to show the faint trembling of his fingers, yet you were still unconvinced. Although he had been an ally in your fight against Emperor Ildanev, there was an inscrutable side to him. His profession as wandering jack-of-all-trades -- interpreter, provisioner, sleuth, musician, agent -- was how he cultivated connections and gathered intel. As invaluable as his talents were, your first opinion of him was far from favorable, and Elimval and Salvador also suspected his shrewd manner. The first few trials helped those misgivings fade, but they were starting to return to their former state. The shifty expression he wore while giving proof of his concern did not help his outlandish story.
"As impossible as it seems, the legendary convict Lennegrid is set to be released after thousands of years." Even lacking context of her name, you had your doubts, but Salvador, who was familiar with her, snorted derisively.
"You seriously expect us to buy that? If Lennegrid actually existed, she'd be as old as Ildanev by now. 'Sides, I never believed the stories about her. They all say she was thrown into jail instead of executed the moment her revolt was put down. Right hand or not, he doesn't go easy on his enemies, much less traitors."
You pieced together the legend from their conversation. In ancient times, Lennegrid had helped establish the empire's foundational laws as Minister of Justice and Chief General. There was no surprise Ildanev placed such stock in her, but it was surprising that she rose up against him. Still, he thwarted her uprising single-handedly in seven days, regardless of the fact she commanded the entire army.
She was later incarcerated in the empire's largest prison complex, practically an underground city where the most dangerous criminals lived. Ildanev locked her away at the lowest level and implemented an additional layer of security. As a result, no one had seen her since then.
The whole affair earned her a reputation as a legendary convict, one of the earliest known 'Symbols of Evil'. Some scholarly journals from the middle ages contain records of debates if her story was fabricated to bolster the emperor's influence, though such discourse soon became strictly forbidden.
Meanwhile, there were not only those who believed in her existence but revered her as a guardian deity of criminals and thieves. During his days as a dragon breeder, Salvador remembered how more than a few outlaws would brand their mounts with her name. Whether performative or not, anyone else as long-lived as Ildanev would indeed be a similarly supernatural being. And according to Ripley, both her existence and her release was confirmed.
"Someone high up in the tower has actually been keeping track of her sentence, and I have a very reliable source that says her confinement ends tomorrow. Everyone from lone wolves to crime gangs are abuzz at the prospect. Do you know why?"
He paused for effect. "They're going to start a full-scale war over her. Whoever can convince the very first Symbol of Evil to join them will gain incredible power." You were beginning to grasp the situation's significance. However, there was one question on your mind.
"That's just it; no one knows why they're simply letting her free. By all accounts, she should have gone to the chopping block ages ago. But this might be related." He nonchalantly placed a corked bottle filled with a grimy liquid on the table. It was Creepmud, the entire cause of your predicament, exactly as repulsive as you remembered. A chill ran down your spine.
"Now you're getting the picture. This is Creepmud, the very source of all those Stigmals you've fought. It seems like a large, highly refined quantity is on the black market, and the gangs are buying all they can to build their forces for the battle."
Merely hearing the words 'Creepmud' and 'Stigmals' was unpleasant. Despite his trembling fingertips, Ripley grinned the same suspicious grin as when you first met. It revived memories from your arrival in the empire, when you fought against the hordes of zombie-like Stigmals and out from under Ildanev's grasp.
They were far more troublesome than regular monsters. The transformation gave them a hunger for flesh, and they would not die until a small gem known as a Komora Stone was removed from their bodies. That still did not end the threat, since their corpses produced an infectious fluid which needed to be stored in enchanted bottles. Only then was the vicious cycle finally cut.
You had been caught in the throes of this calamity from the start. Only Salvador who happened to see your plight gave you a chance to stop the mastermind: High Emperor Ildanev, his true identity a god of judgment named Zylgan. To obtain revenge against someone in your original world of Neotellus, he was building a massive army of Stigmals and even dispatched a handful to test their performance. As such, this conflict involved more just the two of you -- the fate of two realms hung in the balance.
Although your first encounter was inconclusive, you defeated his supposedly invulnerable battleship Karmada, inspiring enough people to join your side and form a proper anti-imperial organization. That drove you to journey across the world and find additional allies for your cause. But...
"But I hope you realize Ildanev hasn't been twiddling his thumbs the whole time." Ripley spoke as if reading your mind. Naturally, Ildanev's Stigmal army was steadily growing. He had abandoned the ruins left in the aftermath of your first clash and built a new capital. The purpose was not only to stop the rampant spread among the populace but also to focus on Stigmalization's military use. Thus, the new and improved Creepmud was completely under imperial control.
This meant Lennegrid's release was not her sentence conveniently ending but a part of Ildanev's scheme. The empire would use the criminal gangs intent on capturing her to spread their battle-ready Stigmals and eliminate them in the process. Fully aware of the circumstances, you unintentionally heaved a groan.
"It looks like you finally believe me. Yes, it's just as bad as you think. At the very least, we better find Lennegrid before anyone else does."
Ripley chuckled casually. "I'll slip you into the prison complex, but the rest is up to you. She should be easy enough to convince, though. The enemy of an enemy is a friend, right? We couldn't ask for a more powerful ally. Very much worth the effort."
His fingertips still trembled.
Epilogue[]
The legendary culprit Lennegrid, after being confined for thousands of years, emerged with a demonic appearance. Although more doubtful than ever that you could win her favor, you needed to place her under custody before any one of the competing criminal organizations did regardless.
To that end, you chased her throughout the prison complex, ever nearing the surface. The Lightholders' persistent pursuit and the increasing numbers of outlaws intensified the situation. Making matters worse, among the newcomers were Stigmals created by the imperial-produced Creepmud. Perhaps they had been given it by their bosses and willingly poured it over themselves, unaware they would never return to their human forms.
"May dark swallow the light..." That ominous chant reached your ears once more. All Stigmals recited it as if by instinct, providing one way to distinguish them even before their body deteriorated. As the Stigmalization process continued, they also emitted a foul smoke, which now began to permeate the windless prison. Covering your nose and mouth with a bandanna, you gave the signal to split up to Elimval and Salvador. Although a risky maneuver, it would prevent them from gathering in one place and thin out the miasma.
......
You fought alone through the smog after Lennegrid. She would appear and disappear at random, never letting any one encounter last for long. You recognized this tactic; she was testing your strength. Meanwhile, the Stigmalized bandits attacked without cease. You granted a swift end to the wretched souls, expertly removing their Komora Stones before moving on -- not only to keep pace with Lennegrid but to avoid seeing their corpses.
Besides their eerie chant, Stigmals wore a telltale mark of two interlinked circles on their body, usually behind an ear. That was the Stigma, and every glimpse reminded how it was also engraved large upon your chest.
As life ebbed from your beloved's body, she gave you her power of light. This later let you create a holy sword to protect your allies during the first battle against Ildanev's. However, the Stigma was linked closely to your memory of landing the fatal blow upon her, and it returned more painful than usual.
The pain increased with every step. Perhaps exacerbated by the smog, your head grew light, and you felt strength draining from your body. Her smile and her suffering in the back of your mind also faded. Finally, your legs could no longer support your body and it fell to the ground. You did not even have the mind to force a cry of help from your throat.
"What, is that all you've got? You might know how to use a sword, but it'll take more than skill to impress me." A low but feminine voice rang out. You saw Lennegrid's twisted figure step forward from the mist. She knelt down and swiped the bandanna from your chest. A faint smile formed on her lips as she stared at the Stigma there.
"I figured it was you. Anyone who can wear that mark but still keep their right mind and body absolutely deserves to call it a symbol of righteousness. Then that steely, firm gaze I saw during our battles... You're definitely the Hero, a warrior of justice... like I was."
You managed to wrinkle your brow at her last words, conveying your doubt. Still grinning, she turned her head sideways.
"Because this is what I am now." There, behind her ear, was the Stigma.
"Ildanev tested me as he tested you. As vengeance against the humans who betrayed him as Zylgan, he bathed all that claimed to fight for justice in Creepmud. He enjoyed watching them transform into mindless, heartless monsters. Still, your case is much more tragic than mine. I heard him boasting how he forced you to kill Belgantier, his sister and your loved one."
Zylgan was once a revered god, but his judgment was altogether too strict and unsparing, and the humans revolted. The resulting war involved many other gods sympathetic to the mortals' plight, and his own supporters dwindled to three races: giants, demons, and dragons. When his sister decided to oppose him, he was finally defeated... or so the original myth goes in Neotellus.
Simply hearing the name 'Belgantier' caused your pulse to quicken, and you reflexively glanced up at a nearby window. Lennegrid noticed and spoke with a pitying tone.
"Are you looking for the Void Stars? You won't be able to make them out with the smoke this thick. Besides, they're too far away to be seen at night."
High in the skies were four darkly shining stars facing in each cardinal direction that protected Belgantier's palace in the center. These celestial bodies were not of Neotellus. Reluctant to kill her brother, she instead sealed him in a duplicate world called Contratellus and placed her residence on the border between the realms.
"If that's how you came here, you should know how this world was created."
You nodded in affirmation. It was not just Zylgan sealed away in Contratellus but his three allied races as well. However, their alliance did not last after their confinement, and a power struggle erupted. The winner was Zylgan disguised as a human named Ildanev, and he established the current empire. As time passed, giants, demons, dragons, humans, and pockets of other races mingled and propagated to establish a unique demographic makeup.
Ildanev ruled over all of it with devastating Retribution Spires launched from the flying battleship, the Karmada. Regardless, neither that authority nor the flow of time could slake his thirst for revenge against Neotellus, and he finally launched the first invasion of his Stigmal soldiers a few years ago. An unlikely sequence of events brought you to Belgantier's palace, and then...
"You killed her?" Lennegrid asked casually, prompting a single tear to roll from the edge of your eye.
The origins of Stigmalization lied with Kaiserin, a powerful witch who aided Zylgan in the Neotellan war. Ildanev experimented with the process upon the demons and their offspring, yet no matter how much the process was refined, the Stigmals themselves never became any stronger in the process. Finally losing patience, Ildanev temporarily shed his divine status, slipped through the border, and revived Kaiserin to unlock the secrets of her magic.
At that time, you had been traveling across Neotellus to investigate the localized Stigmal outbreaks. Belgantier, noticing her brother's actions, sought you and revealed the secret of the two worlds. She spoke of how much she regretted using her power of harmony to enforce Zylgan's tyranny before tearfully asking you to save both realms. You agreed and spent the next several days discussing strategy... which turned out to be unexpectedly precious. The more you shared, the closer you grew, but despite those tight bonds...
"Ildanev poured Creepmud all over her." The mere mention of that tragedy pierced your heart with the same pain as the day it occurred, regardless of how long it had been and how many times you recalled it. He somehow learned Belgantier was preparing to destroy him for good, so he returned to Contratellus and used his secret weapon on his own sister. By transforming her into a Stigmal, her sealing magic would be undone, granting him freedom at last. The intense vengeance reacted to his reobtained divine might, changing him into a fearsome dark god.
However, you prevented his plan from fully succeeding. Answering Belgantier's final wish, you killed her before she completely transformed The sacrifice strengthened her sealing magic, and you obtained her power of light. Although neither that nor your integrity alone could ward the effects of Stigmalization, together they could resist it. Thus, you remained untouched by the mark's influence, altering it into a symbol of true justice.
Aware of this, Ildanev brought you with him into Contratellus both as retribution and to test the strength of the justice you bore. He set you up as the goddess of harmony's murderer and the Stigmals' originator, drawing the attention of the Lightholders. Thus began the lengthy trial to redeem your reputation.
"That sounds a lot like what I went through, minus the whole millennia-long prison term." Lennegrid wiped the tears from your face.
"Everything is just as the legends said. I first believed Ildanev was a wise, noble emperor, so I gave him my full support. But then I managed to get ahold of the Blessed Chalices and learned about his whole sordid past along with the existence of another world."
The Blessed Chalices were holy articles Ildanev gave to each leader of the three races. They contained the complete history of Contratellus as well as proof of rule over their fiefs. You had also seen everything that transpired with their power.
"I was determined to overthrow Zylgan, but I was the one who got thrown... into jail, and the rest is history. However, what never left these walls is how he used me as a guinea pig for his Creepmud experiments. They doubled as a way to test my heart of justice, and I'll have you know I held out for the longest time."
You stared at her in awe. Even if she was exposed to a weaker version of the Creepmud, she must have had an iron will to withstand it.
"Yeah, the stuff wasn't as strong or refined back then. It rotted your body, but it wouldn't affect your spirit if you were stubborn enough. Unfortunately, there's no stopping scientific progress. It only took him a few thousand years to make it potent enough to infect me."
As she spoke, she closed her eyes tight. Clearly, she was struggling to hold back the dark urges. The new variety was indeed fearsome. "I probably don't have much time left, so let's not waste it arguing. Sorry if this reopens an old wound for you..."
Lennegrid reached down to take your hand, still clasping your sword, then slowly lifted it so that the blade's tip sunk into her chest. Opening your eyes wide, you tried with whatever might you could muster to pull it back.
"Don't fight it; this is all I can do to help the cause of justice. I've waited so long to meet the Hero Ildanev spoke so highly about, but then he told me he was going to bring you here and have us do battle. Imagine, two legendary heroes ironically locked in a duel. But I don't want to give him that satisfaction. I want a proper death so you can take the last of my strength."
You indeed felt her power of light coursing into you through the sword. However, you were confused how she knew you were coming. Seeing your expression, she gave a wry smile.
"What, did you forget he can take human form whenever he wants? Surely you noticed his fingertips trembling when he told you to come here. They did the same thing when he unlocked my cell. That's his quirk whenever he gets really excited about something, like the prospect of me killing you."
Her words meant only one thing: Ripley was Ildanev.
"Hero, you should do further research into this world's origins. You'll find the key to victory there..." Lennegrid leaned over to whisper into your ear, further driving the blade into her body. The sensation similar to when Belgantier laid her hand on you grew even more intense, and you wept once again...
......
The miasma still hung thick in the air, though somehow it did not hinder you at all. You had lost track of time. The next thing you knew, you were standing up, Lennegrid's body in one arm. The blade had already been removed, its tip embedded in her Komora Stone.
Lennegrid saw her purpose through. She died not a convict or a Stigmal but a human, resisting the Creepmud's effects until the bitter end. As you stared at her Stone, you made a solemn vow. You would go to the capital, destroy Ildanev, and clear your name.
