Tales in the Night is a Raid Event scheduled to start on September 1, 2021 at 8:00 PM (PDT/PST) and end on September 7, 2021 at 8:00 PM (PDT/PST). It is the one hundred thirty first episode of the Dark Stigma story and sixty sixth in the Malice Canon storyline.

Prologue

"Miranesia... Y-you..." The man on the bed writhed fitfully as he called someone's name. He appeared to be tormented by a nightmare were it not for his wide-open eyes. His face was sunken like a cadaver's, but he still had his life, if not his sanity. A servant kneeling by his side wept.

"Oh, my sultan. How could this happen?" Indeed, the ailing figure belonged to the ruler of Yamuul, a small nation to the southwest. You had been summoned in secret by the vizier, looking very pale and anxious. According to him, the sultan was not ill, but bereft of his soul.

"Everything changed when My Liege began to suffer from insomnia..."

Nearly two months beforehand, the sultan struggled to find sleep. Every apothecary in the nation was consulted, but none of their slumber-inducing drugs proved effective, and his condition worsened. It was then the vizier thought loneliness from his wife's recent death was the cause. He asked a fair woman to provide him companionship during the night, but this held shockingly morbid consequences.

The next morning found that attendant dead in the sultan's chambers. Unthinkable as it was, he had in fact killed her. All traces of his gentle demeanor were replaced with mania brought on by his sleeplessness. Afraid to raise the issue, they swiftly disposed of the body... only for the sultan to request another mate.

Thus began a terrible cycle. A young beauty entered each evening and left as a lifeless corpse with the dawn. This sudden transformation terrified his servants, but they obeyed in the hopes it would pass.

On the fifth day, following the murder of a girl named Miranesia, a traveling storyteller came to the palace with claims she could solve the sultan's problem. Her name was Scheherazade, and her charming tales and mysterious melodies brought sleep to all who listened. True to her word, she lulled the sultan into a satisfying slumber every night, improving his health and manner.

However, several days prior to your arrival, there was a new crisis: the sultan became utterly unresponsive. All he did was twist and turn in his bed, and Scheherazade was nowhere to be seen. His appearance led everyone to believe his soul had been removed from his body and trapped in the strange woman's stories. It was now clear she was a sorceress, the older sister of Miranesia. As sympathetic as her vengeful deed was, it could not go without punishment.

After the vizier finished the story, he seized your arms and looked at you with tearful, pleading eyes. Yamuul was surrounded by other small countries. The sultan commanded just enough respect and influence from its neighbors to prevent invasion, yet rumors of his poor health were already spreading. Everyone feared his passing would trigger a full-scale war. He needed to recover as soon as possible for the peace and safety of all.

With a full grasp of the situation, you agreed to set out at once to search for Scheherazade.

Epilogue

The moon glinted ominously over the wasteland as you pursued Scheherazade. Her captivating melody still echoed around you, and only the thick cloth covering your head prevented it from taking effect. But for all of your determination, you kept wondering why the sultan was calling the name of her sister, Miranesia, even while he suffered. You felt this was a hint to resolving the matter, and, if he was caught in Scheherazade's story, the fastest way to learn his circumstances was to join him.

After signaling this to your allies, you removed the tightly bound cloth. At once, a beautiful song entered your ears, followed by a bright light assaulting your eyes. Strength drained from your body as it fell to the dusty ground. Her illusion was taking over. If your spirit had not been hardened by numerous trials, it too would be forfeit. Fortunately. you managed to hold fast to a portion of it as the storyteller's world spread out before you...

When your sight returned, you saw you were surrounded by a thick mist. There was nothing else but a man and a woman standing a short distance away.

"Miranesia... I'm... sorry..." Though the man's speech was slow and labored, the elaborate headgear and jeweled sword tied to his waist were obvious clues he was the sultan. However, the woman to whom he directed his words of contrition was not Miranesia, but Scheherazade. She replied with a gentle yet exasperated tone.

"My dear, you are all too cruel to me, desiring my sister even in your mindless state. When I first placed a spell of insomnia on you, I had hoped I would be invited to your bed, winning your favor and eventually becoming your new bride. I never expected my meddlesome sibling would hide the fact you summoned a young maiden from our family and steal your heart first..."

You came to share the sultan's viewpoint at some point during her explanation, as if you were inhabiting his body. Peering into her eyes, you could see quiet madness inside. Everyone had assumed Scheherazade was acting out of vengeance for her sister, but she had masterminded the entire crisis. Only Miranesia's interference prevented her from succeeding.

"At least she got what she deserved. She had no idea my curse forced you to end the life of any other woman by your side when you woke up..."

She grinned with satisfaction... and obvious hatred. "But although she was removed, your obsession lingers on. Insanity did nothing to suppress the regret you felt in killing her. So, I created a story where the two of you were reunited. It was the only way I could capture your soul and keep you to myself. Ever since I was young, I wanted to be the queen, and I wanted you to be all mine."

Scheherazade stepped closer, eager to claim her prize, then suddenly stopped. She finally sensed your intrusion, and her voice became shrill and terse.  "...You're that one pursuing me earlier. Why are you here? And how do you still have your sanity?!"

Ignoring the storyteller's question, you instead used the sultan's body to draw his sword and drive it into her body.

The witch breathed her last in the story she herself wove. With her spell undone, the sultan of Yamuul recovered his soul and his right mind. War with the surrounding territories was also averted. However, he oddly could not remember anything about the ordeal: neither the names of Scheherazade or Miranesia, nor the long nightmare he had endured...
