Prologue[]
"Damruza, by royal order, you are to remove this lock. Otherwise, I will remove your head." On the dungeon's lowest level, Queen Merone of Ribaff addressed a stoic man outside the cell door. "Please forgive such drastic measures, Your Highness. There was no more expedient way to ensure your safety. Until the storm has passed, you mustn't leave."
Damrusa responded with complete composure, realizing the queen's bluff. Merone could not kill him, both because his expertise in the sealing arts was the kingdom's last hope... and she secretly loved him more than anyone. Which reason was greater, she herself did not know. He, on the other hand, was aware her vain outburst was simply an expression of inner conflict, also revealing she still let emotion dictate her actions even as Ribaff faced utter ruin.
"I'll dispatch servants before I depart. Wait here while my task is carried out. Losing you will also mean losing the path to restoration." The queen started running calculations in her head after his last sentence. Since she took the throne, the amount of capital needed to restore the nation often appeared in her dreams. Damruza knew this and used it against her. Money was directly related to her people's livelihoods. That was why she had arranged a trade agreement with the neighboring countries to take effect once the storm faded. He reminded Merone her presence as a ruler was crucial... as was his imminent sacrifice.
"Please don't mourn my death. Sealing Libetia has been our long desire." He was correct, but she could not stop herself from shedding a single tear. Libetia was originally the name of a witch executed by Merone's ancestor, founder of the kingdom. A treasonous minister revived her hatred as a cursed storm seven generations ago. He fell victim to the unruly waves, but the storm itself did not abate even after two hundred years. As it raged intermittently over the coast of Ribaff, the figure of a woman could be seen in the middle of the whirling winds. They destroyed ships at sea and stole lives on land.
For that reason, the queen and Damrusa, born from a famed family of magicians, lived for the preordained purposes of sealing Libetia and restoring the ravaged domain. Damruza's diligence in studies was rewarded with peerless talent, and Merone used her skillful diplomacy to prepare the commerce treaty. However, its enactment was conditional upon the establishment of a new sea route, which was only possible after Libetia's removal. This was something Ribaff also wanted for decades, but such hopes were nonexistent until now with Damruza. He would sacrifice his life to perform the sealing ritual, letting Merone direct the nation's recovery.
It seemed Libetia noticed their chances had improved and responded by increasing the storm's frequency and strength to unprecedented levels. This resulted in repeated failures on Damruza's end, causing the other countries in the treaty to doubt their success. Before they backed out, Merone was determined to give up herself to Libetia. Since she held a grudge against the royal line, its termination might calm her enough to allow sealing, or so the queen believed. Had Damruza not anticipated this and locked her in the dungeon, she would likely have become a waterlogged corpse on the ocean floor.
"I didn't want to die only for the sake of the nation." Merone gripped her true intention so tightly it spilled forth for the first time. Before she could continue, Damruza simply replied:
"I am aware." That was the last they saw of each other. Turning his back, he left the dungeon and headed into the storm.
......
Several days later, the sealing spell succeeded and Libetia's power was contained. The disaster that plagued Ribaff had been trapped inside of a crystal ball through Damruza's sacrifice. When it was presented to Queen Merone, she took a single glance at the frothing waters and gave a firm order. "Place it in the deepest cell of the dungeon and forbid anyone from entering under any circumstance, now and forevermore."
However, after another two centuries, the crystal ball's seal was broken due to a pressing need. A single ship with precious cargo was also trapped along with Libetia, yet even if the queen had noticed it then, she would have done nothing...
Epilogue[]
The storm avatar Libetia was responsible for massive loss of property and life with her slicing winds. She had threatened the nation of Ribaff twice before; her second incursion ended two hundred years ago during Queen Merone's reign. The magician Damruza sacrificed himself to seal her inside of a crystal ball. Unfortunately, the ship trapped alongside her held the lone cure for the current prince's fatal illness.
Although the royal line had remained unbroken since its establishment, quarrels over succession were common. This prince was a rare case of unanimous approval, so losing him would have a profound effect on the nation. The king launched an immediate investigation into the disease's remedy. One was discovered but only created by a genius apothecary named Shogra. Since he lived in the same era as Queen Merone and kept no record of his concoctions, it was seemingly nonexistent thenceforth. Fortunately, there was proof of it aboard the very boat inside Libetia's crystal ball.
Back then, Ribaff hoped to build a trade alliance with its neighbors. This was contingent upon forming a new sea route which demanded Libetia's removal. Damruza had already failed to seal her several times, causing the nations involved to reconsider. As a stopgap, one of the queen's associates, Duchess Werlin, ordered Shogra's medicine as gifts to curry favor with each ruler. The chance of delivery was next to none, but Werlin paid the merchant sailors a great sum to take the risk. What they did not expect was for Damruza to make another sealing attempt -- and succeed, no less -- on the day of their arrival.
When all this was revealed in the duchess' journal, the king made the decision to break open the crystal ball. After he prepared a team of expert magicians guided by your party, the storm was loosed once more.
You had bravely led the venture to recover Shogra's medicine from the ship. Boarding it through the wild waves, you found the precious cargo in the same room with the dead sailors' remains. It was then carried back to the castle and taken by the prince. His condition improved overnight, encouraging the party to complete the mission of resealing Libetia before her merciless gusts could spread further devastation.
After several days, you brought your blade of justice down upon the avatar, allowing the magicians to contain her yet again. The kingdom lavished praise and rewards... all of which you rejected. You claimed triumph was not by your efforts alone but with the aid of both Damruza's and Merone's spirits.
