Prologue[]
Amid the Taboo Sea, the sound of pained moans echoed incessantly. Of course, these did not come from any living creature; they were dead spirits releasing their pent-up anger and suffering in vain. Since ancient eras, the southern ocean currents carried wrecked ships and drowned remains there to form an aquatic graveyard. The passage of time wore the flotsam into ominous gray sand blanketing the floor. Ships avoided this area whenever possible, and no marine fauna dared enter the waters.
Indeed, it was void of all life with the exception of its overseer, a gloomy mermaid duchess by the name of Griaille. Although beautiful, her skin matched the sand's deathly hue. Her father, king of the southern seas, granted her dominion last year after the former lord, his younger brother, abruptly passed away. As the son of a concubine descended from a dark dragon, he was blessed with great magic power. Griaille possessed a similar gift, so the decision to pass responsibility onto her raised no objections from the royal family. Rather, they responded with scornful grins and stifled chuckles.
"Unlike us with our proper lineage, Griaille is a cursed child born of the succubus who took advantage of Father. Such a fate befits her."
The king had first made the announcement from his usual position at the head of the table during one of their usual lavish dinners. It brought a wave of relief over her finely dressed half-siblings -- the odd fish would finally be winnowed out.
Governing the Taboo Sea was as difficult as it was unpleasant. She could only rely on her own magic to keep the spirits of the area confined. Although no one had so much as the potential to help her, they felt not an iota or shame or inferiority. Rather, merely possessing strength was indecent in their eyes. Ever since it emerged in Griaille as she grew up, it served as another reason to scorn her.
The Taboo Sea, like its name suggested, was regarded by the southern ocean mermaids as a holding area for the unclean and harmful. It afforded them a lifestyle without violence, the greatest proof of dignity. Weapons of all kinds were banned. Both the nobility and the commoners enjoyed plentitude and peace of mind.
The only event in the past century which could be considered negative was Griaille's birth. A succubus infiltrated one of the king's dreams, resulting in her sudden appearance at the palace. Though initially shocking, the wan complexion with the scales of her father soon revealed the circumstances. Her very existence was a blight on the family and a target of contempt.
Regardless of this abuse, Griaille gave no hint of using her power to exact revenge. She was still considered royalty and thus partook in those privileges. However, that ignominious position was too much to bear, and none imagined there would be consequences... until now.
Griaille had a plan. It was why she accepted the post fully realizing the king's ulterior motive. First, she instigated a war between the two island nations with whom the underwater kingdom shared rule of the ocean. Then, she created a tempest which formed a giant whirlpool...
Epilogue[]
As fighting between the two island nations intensified, they purchased weapons from the mainland. Those freighters had been urged to deliver the goods in all haste, so they dared crossing the Taboo Sea. That normally quiet area became rife with naval traffic.
Far below, the mermaids merely wrinkled their brows and chided the foolish humans for their noise. They never imagined one of their own was responsible: Griaille, welcoming her usual isolation at the dinner table. While the royal family grew intoxicated, she quickly solidified the next part of her plan.
It had manifested as a raging storm. Billows shoved the vessels into a massive whirlpool which scattered their cargo across the Taboo Sea. The spirits populating Griaille's territory became a veritable army. By contrast, no one else in the kingdom possessed weapons, much less the ability to handle them. The revolt was all but guaranteed to succeed; she would turn the entire ocean into her lifeless domain.
However, she underestimated the kingdom's vulnerability. Her father sent an urgent request for help, answered by exorcists and a small group of warriors. Their leader, a fearless figure named the Hero, cut through Griaille's forces, eventually reaching her...

Your fierce battle concluded with Griaille, despondent, slitting her throat. The mastermind's fall meant the exorcists could start resealing the phantoms at the bottom of the Taboo Sea. Only her own spirit was nowhere to be found. It had dissolved into the seafoam and ascended to the surface, as if in search of light.
While reporting the outcome to the royal family, their obvious lack of compassion pained your heart. They held a victory banquet that evening, but you sat alone in her vacated seat and raised a silent toast...
