Prologue[]
Half-breeds were the offspring between humans and monsters. Their inhuman side blessed them with magical talent, and their human side granted them flexible morality. Such a combination led many to choose combat-focused occupations, be it ruthless brigand or chivalrous knight. Naturally, nations would also enlist individuals or hire mercenaries of mixed blood, but few had access to a population large enough to build an entire unit.
This meant Tazra's royal army was truly exceptional. Not only did their regiment of half-breeds answer directly to the king, but its commander served as his right hand for generations. Rozali, the current leader, descended from the legendary serpent of the Tazra Caverns and the youngest princess of the founding family. Even without the benefit of noble lineage, her strength was the greatest in the nation. She seemed tailor-made for the position, and the king trusted her wholly.
As deserved as it was, some found her privilege vexing. Among them was the head priest Baymoon who protested her installation to its very moment. He claimed half-breeds used deception to secure their status all throughout history, and Rozali was no different. So thorough was their trickery that it had become customary for peerage like himself to wed monsters for the sake of Tazra's future. They plotted to take over the kingdom not via direct aggression, but gradual integration, or so he posited.
Ultimately, Baymoon's arguments were ignored. The renown and integrity of Rozali outweighed the most impassioned rebuttals... but that reputation was precisely why news of her revolt shocked the public. She had taken both the head priest and the sickened king hostage before ordering the royal army to capture the capital. It was hard to believe one who had sworn loyalty to Tazra would rebel against it.
Similarly perplexed by the happenings, you came to quell the uproar. It was too early to pass judgment, but you hoped some yet undisclosed logic guided Rozali's actions...
Epilogue[]
You had finally clashed with Rozali enough to sense the heart of justice beating inside of her. After taking a few steps back, you relaxed your stance, sheathed your sword, and asked her why she resorted to hostage-taking and rioting. Recognizing your demonstration of trust, Rozali lowered her blade as she ordered her soldiers to clear out of the hall. She then stared directly into your eyes and explained her actions.
"I was given no other option. Baymoon had deceived them into starting a revolt." Her calm matched the silence of the room as she revealed the underlying circumstances.
"That cur has always been antagonistic towards my kind, but His Majesty never paid heed to his ignorant views. Apparently, he had enough of that and invented the ludicrous rumor I only earned my position because I was His Majesty's mistress. He claimed he'd present proof at the next council meeting, and with the king in his bedridden state, he wouldn't be able to refute it. After easily ousting the king, Baymoon would be crowned."
Anger and disappointed resignation became gradually more evident in her tone. "The evening of the meeting came and I expected the worst. Usually, I would assign someone to stand guard before the king's chambers, but I decided to do it myself. I rarely left his side since he fell ill anyway, and Baymoon took advantage of that. He sent his men to the barracks to spread rumors I declared a revolution. The moment I saw my soldiers running up in full armor, shouting they would support me no matter what crime they committed, I knew I had fallen into his trap."
Once Rozali was established as a renegade, her proximity to the king would be interpreted as having taken him hostage. The other servants, unaware of the high priest's machinations, took a single look at the king's quarters surrounded by armed half-breeds and told the public as much. And with the exception of Rozali, the soldiers were truly prepared to kill him. Baymoon's audacity to use the loyalty of[Snake General Rozali|Rozali's]] soldiers against her left you flabbergasted.
"My troops already set fire to a number of towers in the name of rebellion. They believed I ordered them to destroy anyone who challenged us. I tried to tell them otherwise, but their passion was slow to cool. We had started a genuine uprising." She asserted she never intended to harm the king, instructing her soldiers to protect him at all costs. She could not bring the revolt to an end, but as its 'originator' she was able to set bloodless terms. To that end, she locked Baymoon in the dungeon.
"I would've rather killed him, and he obviously expected to die. However, I knew that would spark a civil war along race lines, and I refused to hew any closer to his plot than necessary. Yet no matter what course of action I took, a difficult struggle awaited me..." She then dropped the sword at your feet.
"Use that to kill me, then tell everyone I sought to atone for my wrongdoing in blood and that my dying wish was for my soldiers to be exiled instead of executed. All know I'd never allow an enemy to take my weapon, so the sight of it and my corpse will prove your words are true..."
It seemed Rozali had long decided this was the best conclusion to the so-called revolt. You asked if no other way existed, since the priest would clearly take joy in her death. But before she could answer, soft footsteps came from behind her. Through the gloom of the hall, you saw a man approaching with a feeble yet straightforward gait, looking at the commander. His very presence was reassuring, and he spoke with endless warmth in his voice.
"I may be ill, but I'm far from deaf. Even if I were, I'm wise enough to deduce what is happening in my own castle. And I'd appreciate it if you didn't dismiss my army; I won't exile a single half-breed as long as I live. Also, if you're going to protect me, at least make it easier for me to undo the locks. Moreover, that priest can't go over my head while it wears the crown. In fact, I think I'm well enough to sentence him for his scheme. Once we force him to confess, everyone should agree his punishment is deserved."
Upon hearing the king's stern yet gentle words, Rozali shuddered with joy. She tried to protest as tears streamed down her face, facing away to hide them from him. "With all due respect, your mercy is unmerited. We may have been tricked, but we acted of our own free will..."
He interrupted her in the same patrician manner. "[Snake General Rozali|Rozali]], your soldiers swore loyalty through thick and thin, standing alongside you even during the presumed revolt. To have one so revered in my service is proof our nation is invincible. Why would I give up such a priceless resource?"
She could only nod to the king's reasoning. He soon announced the truth, the mastermind was expelled from Tazra, and the army of half-breeds regained the public's trust. As for Rozali, she too kept her lovely head along with the hypnotically writhing snakes atop of it.
