Javert searched across the land in pursuit of Jean Valjean. Catching the carefree, lawless Valjean had become Javert's very reason for living. Several times he had managed to corner Valjean, but each time had allowed him to escape. Even so, he continued his pursuit with just as much tenacity as ever.
