Prologue[]
The skies above the ship were neither cloudy nor blue, neither dawn nor dusk. That foreboding ambivalence finally gave way to a relentless storm. Your craft was heaved to and fro across the waves, forcing you and your allies to hold tight onto whatever could give support. Since ancient times, the country of Ada had called this part of the ocean 'The Devil's Pool' for the countless sea monsters that lurked in the deep. Seazus, their overseer, had near god-like power which had allowed him to wrest territorial control from a fearsome seven-headed kraken long ago. His influence was felt on land as well as he ordered raids upon the humans' shoreline dwellings.
Ada responded by strengthening its military and coastal defenses, forming a tenuous but lasting deadlock. Though the people wanted to take more action against the monsters, they lacked the necessary resources. A failed assault would leave them at the mercy of the creatures along with any nearby nation that suddenly wished to ignore their non-aggression pact. Regardless, the king of Ada was a renowned warrior and tactician. He always kept a discerning eye on the ocean in case a chance presented itself, but not even he expected how soon it did.
It began when the prince from a large trading kingdom visited with the intention of marrying Princess Aqualotte, the king's oldest daughter. There were no objections from either side at first, but soon after they were betrothed, the prince learned of Aqualotte's sadistic and supercilious personality. It was too much to bear, so he requested their engagement be annulled in favor of marrying Aqualotte's younger but mild-mannered sister. Such a decision was unprecedented, but the king agreed to the proposal. He of all people was aware of his eldest's poor behavior and hoped it would teach her a lesson. However, the whole affair only complicated matters.
The disgraced Aqualotte grew even more cantankerous despite numerous offers to appease her. Finally, she announced she was moving away and left the castle. No one heard from her for a number of years until her shocking return as the wife of Ada's greatest enemy, Seazus. Her commitment was demonstrated not only by her ghastly transfiguration, but by how she informed him of weak points in the kingdom's defenses. The black waters gradually reached the shores of Ada and the navy could do little to stop that.
As a countermeasure, the royal magician concocted a potion that would purge the ocean of their dark influence, but it was so potent that it would take the lives of anyone with malicious thoughts if they merely touched the bottle. For this reason, it was placed in a bronze box and carried by ship. Unfortunately, it was caught in a skirmish and lost beneath the waves, still sealed shut. With no time to prepare another batch, Ada's king was forced to take direct action, personally confronting Seazus. Though he emerged from the desperate battle victorious, his wounds proved to be mortal and he perished some days later. Both sides had lost their leaders, but the people were able to start down the road to recovery while the sea monsters languished.
However, this changed one month ago with their sudden attacks on trading vessels. What few survivors there were also bore chilling news. It seemed Aqualotte heard it was possible to revive Seazus with a sinister ritual that demanded the blood of a thousand humans.
You had been summoned by Ada to defeat their former princess before she could achieve her goal. Through the forbidding ocean, your ship rocked wildly. A new battle was about to begin. The sea roared with the monsters' wrath, but you were determined to stop the return of Seazus and restore peace...
Epilogue[]
The battle was drawing to a close. The growing storm forced the Lightholders to retreat. Most of the sea monsters had been defeated. Ada's ships were vanishing beneath the waves one after the other. However, the deepening maroon of the sea proved the human losses were perilously close to one thousand. Aqualotte breached the water near your craft, her face an odd mix of consternation and calm.
"If you would struggle this hard to prevent my husband's return, outsider, then you leave me with no other choice. Watch and tremble in fear." She brought her sharp nails to her neck and pressed down. They sank into her flesh to produce a streaming trail of crimson.
"I will be... the thousandth sacrifice... My blood... might be tainted... it is still colored... with the red of humankind..." The scarlet beads spread out across the surface of the ocean like petals before slowly sinking. It would not be long before they reached Seazus' remains at the seafloor. This removed all hesitance from your mind. You reached for the bronze box and pried open the heavy lid. There was no more time. If the Drops of Purging were not used at once, the king of the sea monsters would be revived, dooming Ada and the rest of the continent. The threat of the potion killing you if it found the slightest fault in your morality, which would result in greater tragedy, stayed your hand before. But with the decision made, your mind was strangely calm as you gripped the glass flask...
Nothing happened at first. You then removed the cork and poured the concoction into the Devil's Pool. As it flowed from the mouth, its might was palpable, but left no ill effect. However, at the same time, you sensed an ominous rumbling from the bottom of the ocean. It seemed Seazus had been awakened by Aqualotte's blood.
You worried the potion would not take effect soon enough. Sweat beaded upon your brow as the ship rocked wildly on the reddened swells. Then, a monstrous hand emerged from the depths. Seazus had returned, your fear confirmed by the terrible presence beneath your vessel. As if rejoicing in his return, the waves leapt even higher.
Giving up on the potion, you tossed the emptied bottle aside and drew your sword. Yet before you could take further action, you noticed a faint light coming from the ocean. It soon became a blinding glare as the Drops of Purging took full effect, forming a holy cover over the infernal waters. The giant hand balled into a fist and struck the glaze with a great thud, but it did not rise again. Indeed, none of the sea monsters reemerged for the invisible barrier had sealed them below the surface.
With the threat contained, you were able to continue to your next destination. The king of the sea monsters may have been revived, but he would never harm another human again. However, this changed one month ago with their sudden attacks on trading vessels. What few survivors there were also bore chilling news. It seemed Aqualotte heard it was possible to revive Seazus with a sinister ritual that demanded the blood of a thousand humans.
