Prologue[]
"So, who was that person?" Goun asked Narum while pouring a fresh bottle into his friend's glass. Three times a month, he would visit Goun's house for drinks and conversation. This was actually his fourth visit in the current month; he had brought a stranger the previous evening with a request to let them stay the night before leaving. The guest was quiet, declined to eat, and departed soon after sunrise.
"I figured they were trustworthy since you were the one asking, but there's got to be more to the story."
"If they weren't a disturbance, what's the big deal? My place can't take visitors as cramped and messy as it is, but you, pal, are a real stand-up guy. I knew I could count on you."
Narum smiled as he always did when he complimented Goun. They had known each other for over fifty years. Goun's family owned a famous medicine company, and Narum was the son of one of their many employees. As they were close in age, they became close friends, often playing in an unoccupied warehouse. Narum's father eventually left to open his own shop, but he still honored the hierarchy of his former employer. This was expressed in how he was quick with praise and rarely terse even in jest.
Goun never resented that stance. If anything, he was silently appreciative of his sycophancy and the resultant ego boost. However, he now felt mockery within those kind words. Waving off the praise with a vague comment, he pressed again. "Isn't that all the more reason why I should know?"
"Well, they were actually that famous Hero."
"Are you serious?" Goun held his breath. Otherwise, fear would have brought him to scream. A cold sweat ran down his back and questions raced through his mind.
"The Hero was under my roof? Why now of all times? Was this a coincidence?" He stifled his unease and continued the conversation.
"Ah, one of the central figures in the new government. ...Wait, why would someone so important bunk with us rabble?"
"They're back in town for the regular assembly, but there's a lodging shortage with the rush of workers here to fill job demand. So that even one more person could have a warm bed, the Hero had set up camp on the outskirts."
Narum paused for a sip. "Ahh... Anyway, I was passing by and decided to help out by finding them a decent place to rest. It was the least I could do; I mean, we're talking about the one who toppled Ildanev and his iron rule."
Goun sensed Narum was telling the truth and let himself relax slightly. The new capital was indeed shorthanded in several aspects as eager hands gathered to rebuild the city. Narum was naturally indebted to the Hero as being directly responsible for his success in starting an employment agency. However, Goun’s composure was soon lost again to a surging temper.
He knew it was partly irrational jealousy. Narum founded his company with money earned by his father working for Goun's. He was free to begin a new venture, but Goun enjoyed no such freedom. The family business was rapidly on the wane as major legacy clients dwindled, most of them in the upper echelons of the previous government. With the empire's downfall, they forfeited their assets if not their lives.
Despite the reduced numbers, he was forced to continue accepting their gruesome demands like a trained dog to stay solvent. Shady items like corpses or rare ingredients he would procure as instructed, and records of these deals were not kept to cover the trail. Therefore, no one else realized Goun's crisis... including his best friend, who had unwittingly brought him into contact with the person responsible. That is what escalated his anger beyond mere frustration.
Goun always bought expensive drinks for Narum, who never remarked on the cost. This was both self-imposed to maintain his position of superiority and to keep up appearances so Narum would not ask questions. Regardless, the mounting pressure naturally made his usual compliments more and more irritating. Unable to hide that unrest for much longer, Goun desperately tried to end their drinking session.
"Sorry, I forgot that my oldest son Minn is coming back home today. You remember Minn, right? He finally got a break from the factory so I wanted to spend some quality time with him."
"No problem at all. We’ll pick up where we left off. Say hi for me."
Easily accepting the excuse, Narum emptied his glass, stood up, and walked through the door. Goun's body remained stiff until he heard his friend's sprightly whistling fade into the distance then opened the cabinet behind him. There was a new ledger on the highest shelf. It had neither been moved, touched, nor seen. Only then did he heave a sigh of relief. Even if the Hero somehow found it, the coded messages could not be deciphered, but this was little reassurance to Goun.
Written on the pages were several clients as well as their orders, but the identities and products were not as listed. For example, a 'catfish whisker' was actually a tail from a tortured rat. 'Beef jerky' was truly a newborn dragon steeped in acid. 'Venison' meant a maiden's corpse. He received these items from the black market and supplied them to the pseudonymized customers.
They were leaders of the Golden Night, elite figures under the old empire who revered Ildanev as a god. Goun had no choice but to deliver under the current conditions. From the list of items, especially the maiden's corpse, it was clear they were going to revive someone. As long as they paid, he would deal with the consequences. He thought of nothing else. Whatever happened to the world was none of his business.
Epilogue[]
Ildanev resided for but a brief moment within the maiden's corpse after his revival; the Hero's offensive prompted him to transform into a massive black dragon. The newly constructed chapel burned, the freshly paved thoroughfare was gouged, and people panicked among the avalanche of wreckage.
One man directly complicit in the villain's return, drug manufacturer Goun, blended into the evacuating throng. Beneath the candent night sky, he made his way to the city outskirts with a sack of gold coins inside his inner coat pocket. He joined the crowd in staring up at the limply flying dragon. Their desired conclusion was near, but his reason for backing the Hero was vastly different.
"The Hero's victory is certain as before. This time, they need to be more thorough about destroying the old imperial faction! Then I can finally burn that ledger and wash my hands of everything. I was right to ask for advance payment. This gold will come in handy for reopening my business. I'll preserve my reputation and maybe even hire some workers from Narum to ingratiate himself further to me. Once the Hero wins, all will be well."
The Hero landed the final blow on Ildanev, yet despite Goun's internal cheers, no one around him celebrated. Rather, fear hung heavy over the capital in an eerie stillness.
The last fires were extinguished, and dawn broke amidst the clear air. Goun left the evacuation site, carrying the gold as carefully as he carried his son as a newborn. He relished in the sensation of relief brought about by events proceeding as planned. Youthful confidence again surged through his body.
"Goun! Thank the Heavens you're alive!" As if pushing aside the morning mist, Narum came running. His voice strained and tears began to form in his eyes upon seeing his friend.
"Ah, Goun..." Goun watched Narum weep like a child, regarding his emotional vulnerability as both irksome and comical. He haughtily thought to reassure him and promise they would celebrate later with a particularly expensive bottle of spirits. In the moment he opened his mouth, Narum spoke again.
"They found your son Minn beneath the rubble... crushed to death."
......
Ildanev had fallen upon the clock tower. His enormous body sprawled across the devastated plaza could be seen from almost every corner of the city, as if he intentionally wanted to remind the residents of his presence. Those that saw it from a close distance trembled with fear. Only one person gazed into the dragon's vacant eyes without reservation: you, the Hero.
"Know this: my advent was enabled by many. Not merely officials and soldiers of my empire, but average civilians, some residing in this very city. How do I know? I observed all from the underworld. For example, the man who gave you lodging the previous night provided my vessel for no better reason than to satisfy his greed."
His voice was like that of wind howling through a cavern, but it gradually weakened with each breath.
"Haha...ha... Listen well. Regardless of how much time passes, there will always be those desiring my return. Let that darkness linger too long, and I will rise once more..." In the following silence, you wondered how that man, who did not object in the slightest to your stay and showed you sufficient hospitality, came to be involved in Ildanev's revival.
Although this weighed heavily on your mind, another realization helped lift it up. Just as there would always be those desiring the darkness, seekers of the light also persisted. Where despair was found, hope existed in equal or greater measure.
