Raphon's skin, steeped in the color of death, was a sign of how many lives he had taken. Orphaned within deserted ruins upon his birth, he had spent his youth running from monsters and hiding from bandits, and he had learned no techniques other than those which could be used to kill his enemies. Raphon knew not even a language of man, for those had been unnecessary for his survival.

Raphon was an ancient city of Gilead (a mountainous region east of the Jordan River), perhaps identical with Raphana, which is mentioned by Pliny as one of the cities of the Decapolis ("Ten Cities"; Greek: deka "ten" and polis "city"), that is now in modern Jordan.
