Elise the magician trembled with rage. Her sister and snake charmer in the circus troupe had been kidnapped by a merciless villain. In hopes of finding some way to claim vengeance, she consulted a shady peddler. The peddler offered her "Threads of Subjugation", able to control humans, beasts, even angels like puppets. However, it came with a warning that all who used the enchanted strings would meet an unhappy ending. In her troubled state, Elise completely disregarded the ominous words.

The form Élise was popular in France in the 17th century and was well-used as an English name by the 19th century. Elise is also a German variant of Alice (English) and has meaning "noble, honorable; of noble kind".
