Prologue[]
You had returned to the Wehmkin Archive to retrieve the Book of Harmony, a tome written by your late beloved Belgantier.
However, waiting for you there was a cruel sight. "May dark swallow the light!" Your beloved Belgantier, wrapped in a dark fog, attacked you without mercy. She had clearly been transformed into a Stigmal. It was the work of none other than Ildanev. To prevent you from obtaining the book, and more importantly, to test the strength of the justice you bore, he used a newly completed technique on his own sister.
But no matter how trying it was, you had no choice but to fight. You had promised to carry out Belgantier's greatest desire. To have a twisted version of herself be the one who prevented you from completing it would have been far too tragic. But with that surmounted, you knew how close you were to that goal.
......
It had been several days since you defeated Belgantier and left the Archive. With the Book of Harmony in hand, you crossed the wilderness in the direction of the new imperial capital. Atop the horse, you were unable to sleep at all. The moment you closed your eyes, you would see the dead figure of your dear goddess. The prospect shocked you at the start, but now that you had actually killed her for a second time, you had been rendered into a half-catatonic state.
All was to obtain the weathered tome, the secret to killing Ildanev. The avatar of the library, goddess of knowledge Eleight, should have known where it was right away, but someone had cast an amnesia spell on her. However, Belgantier's death removed its effects and she could recall it once more. It came after much difficult and grief, but you finally had the key to defeating Ildanev.
You read it cover to cover several times during the journey. For its name, it was more like a manual of the Karmada, explaining its control spells in full detail but in somewhat unsteady script. From that, you could understand how she felt without needing to ask her. The Karmada's original purpose was to prevent Zylgan, her brother, from escaping into Neotellus.
However, as a measure of taking control of Contratellus as Ildanev, he seized control of it, undoubtedly causing Belgantier immeasurable despair. As a result, she was practically confined to her palace which formed the seal between the worlds, further protected on each side by the four Void Stars. Glancing skyward, you could still see them shining darkly now. According to the Book of Harmony, each one held a Void Spirit who had sworn to protect the seal, and presumably remained loyal even now. It also explained the Karmada would not operate in anywhere outside Contratellus. Thus, so long as the Void Stars remained, he could not use it to launch an invasion.
However, there had been more than enough time for him to concoct a countermeasure, and it had finally neared completion. He would turn every resident, beast, and god of Contratellus into a Stigmal and begin a raid of unfathomable size. To prevent that from happening, you needed to recapture the Karmada as soon as possible. Otherwise he would be able to thwart any plan you created.
You scanned the skies again for the flying battleship, expecting it to be near the Void Starts. However, it had hidden itself in the clouds. Even so, you knew more than anyone its general location.
The ship of judgment was controlled by three goddess who recognized Ildanev as the standard of justice: Nona, Dekima, and Moruta (confirm these). It flew around the empire at all times. Anything it recognized as what Ildanev had deemed 'evil' would be destroyed by the ship's and the goddess' power source, the Judgment Bolts, striking the ground from the air. Against such overwhelming power, there was no defense. Entire cities had been destroyed, and even deities fell. In the thousands of years since the empire's foundation, it had smote any sign of revolt, ensuring Ildanev's uninterrupted reign.
It was also present at the previous battle at the old capital. Deemed murderer and cause of the Stigmal phenomenon, it fired a Judgment Bolt at you and your allies. Only the sacrifice of Fudo's youngest brother, Murey, spared you from certain death. At that time, the Stigmal upon your chest shone bright and granted you the Sword of Victory, absorbing the Karmada's defense shield. Had you not interrupted its focus upon your allies, it would have caused a terrible tragedy. Should the second wave had occurred, it would have turned all of them into ash. Fortunately, that was not the case, and they protected the dome which now served as your base of operations. However, you could not rely on a second stroke of luck in the next conflict. Holding a hand to your chest, you let your heavy eyelids fall.
To take back the Karmada, you would need the light sword again. The power sleeping within your Stigma would likely reawaken when the time was right, but... You could do nothing but cling to hope. More than anything, you wanted to succeed, even if it cost your very life. You could sense that as the final battle approached, it too would return.
When you reached the outskirts of the new capital, you would spend the next several days communicating with your allies, forming strategies, preparing defenses... However, fate would not be so kind.
When you finally neared the capital, the situation suddenly changed. The East Void Star was beginning to oddly move from its location, disappearance and reappearance at random. Anyone who knew their true purpose felt a chill run down their spine. Its fearsome implication was the slow unraveling Contratellus' seal.
Soon afterwards, the Karmada also emerged into view and drifted in your direction. Ildanev had decided to use a Judgment Bolt to obliterate you once and for all. In this moment, you felt the Battle for Justice had truly begun.
Epilogue[]
Riding atop a flying dragon, you and Elimval made for the Karmada. Looking back at the ground, you watched the imperial forces clashing with your allies. Combat spread to every corner of the new capital. Fires scattered among the carnage sent plumes of black smoke skyward. Soldiers attacked both foes and civilians indiscriminately. Ildanev was determined to wipe out anyone in his path, even if it meant spilling innocent blood.
So focused was the emperor on destruction that he dropped his human guise. Now commanding the battlefield was the ancient god of judgment Zylgan. Ever since his expulsion from Neotellus, he obsessively tested any human who claimed to stand for justice. He derived pleasure from degradation for thousands of years, and you were first to deny him of that. Seeing this was his best chance yet to eliminate you, he threw strategy to the wind, becoming the chaos of darkness itself.
His anger and rage reached its peak. Those emotions further warped Zylgan's mind and body. By now, the imperial legions were not acting on orders but feeding on his frenzy. The look in their wide-open eyes proved their oblivious rampage. The battle extended into the lower altitudes, dragoons darting about the carnage as if dancing. Malice beget malice, creating a euphoric vicious cycle that swelled without cease. The only measure against it was the power of light. Holding fast to that belief, you rose higher into the bleak skies...
...
"Hero!" Elimval called out from behind. You nodded sharply. The time had come. Passing her the reins, you pressed a hand to your chest and released the power within. A gleam spread into your arm then emerged as an edged beam from your palm. You had not used the Oathblade since the conflict at the old capital, but it shone even stronger than before.
The dragon quickened its pace. You would soon make contact with the underside of the Karmada. Standing up, you let momentum drive the blade into the ship's transparent barrier. The shock from the impact coursed through your entire body. You waited a few interminable moments to see if the shimmering edge would fully pierce the shield.
Doing so was key in your plan to take back the airship from Zylgan. Presenting the control spell received from Belgantier's book to the three goddesses onboard proved you carried on justice in her stead, righting their standard of justice. Clasping your hands almost prayerfully, you pressed harder on the hilt. However, greater force was only returned in kind. The blade did not move. It was obvious its defenses had been improved since your previous encounter.
As if mocking your efforts, an opening in the ship's bottom began to glow bright. A Retribution Spire would fire shortly. Time was running out. You closed your eyes and sighed, but you quickly stopped yourself from sliding into despair. Doing so meant certain defeat, so you needed to hold on to the faintest sliver of hope. Even from the brink of destruction, you could still create an opportunity for your allies. You turned to look at Elimval. She had fainted from the impact, but her hands were tight around the dragon's reins.
Steeling your resolve, you kicked the dragon's back as a retreat signal. Though reluctant to obey, it sensed your firm will and carefully descended with Elimval still mounted. Now, only the Oathblade embedded into the Karmada's shield kept you suspended in midair. If you fell, you knew Elimval would recover soon enough help you. That gave you slight relief, but it was too soon to relax.
The Retribution Spire's first target was unmistakably you. It would vaporize you in seconds, but the shield needed to drop before firing. Throwing the Oathblade towards the ground in that brief interval would both draw the Spire and use its power to protect your allies, similar to what happened in the battle at the old capital. Then, while the Karmada was recharging for its next attack, you believed your allies could find a way to deal with it. You would merely be buying time, but that was sufficient. After all, you did not expect to survive from the start.
One second, two seconds... Sharpening your focus, you waited in silence.
Three, four... The light grew stronger, distorting the air around the hatch.
Five. The Karmada illuminated the entire area.
Turning to look away from the glare, you caught sight of the airborne Zylgan. His eyes met yours, and he stilled his weapon to observe your imminent demise. Although transformed beyond recognition, both his unnerving smile and trembling fingers bore a clear resemblance to Ripley's. You pitied how he took such joy in the loss of justice, all the more lamentable considering his noble origins.
Your sacrifice would not lead directly to his defeat, yet you felt no regret. He had little time remaining to survive in his current state. Victory ultimately belonged to you and your allies. That sense of camaraderie gave you comfort, in addition to the prospect of reuniting with your beloved Belgantier.
The defensive barrier opened. The Retribution Spire was ready.
As the Oathblade was freed, you instantly flung it towards the ground.
Then, your body began to plunge.
The radiance intensified further.
No matter where you looked, there was light.
Though wrapped in blinding brilliance, you managed to spy Zylgan once more.
He was still smiling.
However, three voices in beautiful harmony rang out from above, removing his smile.
The control spell inscribed in the Book of Harmony resonated loud and clear.
"May light swallow the dark." Immediately, the Spire shifted from your direction to that of the twisted god's. It overwhelmed him, his form evaporating in the glare.
In your final glimpse of Zylgan, he wore a mixture of complete bewilderment and childish pleading...
......
"Hero? Hero!" You opened your eyes to see Elimval with tear-stained cheeks gazing back. Behind her stood Salvador, wearing a stern face. Fatigue was apparent in his countenance and his posture. Taking a few moments to recover your senses, you then looked around to find yourself in a ruined area. It had apparently been several days since you lost consciousness. Elimval began to weep anew as she threw her arms around you.
"Do you remember what happened? It's all over! The Karmada's goddesses recognized that only someone who would sacrifice themselves for their allies was truly a figure of justice!" They had reclaimed control on their own. Although not everyone on the ground heard their voices, the Retribution Spire striking Zylgan visually demonstrated their decision.
"I'm still shocked you'd ever think of doing such a thing! I swear, you can be so reckless!" You knew she was expressing fear in what would have happened had she not saved you. Indeed, even as she scolded, she smiled wide. This elicited a grin from you as well... until the thought of Zylgan replaced it with a frown. You were uncertain if he was dead, since you did did not witness him vanishing entirely in the Retribution Spire's glare. Salvador, noticing your concern, reassured you.
"Don't worry about it: he's definitely history. Since you fixed the goddesses' standard of justice, they saw he was as evil as evil gets. And thanks to you throwin' that sword, the Spire didn't hurt us at all. Most of the imperial army threw up their hands soon after realizing their fearless leader was no more, too."
It seemed the Oathblade had ensured the only casualty of the Karmada was its intended target.
"Still, we can't exactly kick back and relax yet. Those Lightholders decided to hightail it, and we already got word of them callin' their friends to action. You've had plenty of time to sleep, so we better get movin' again. And one last thing: I might've pulled the same stunt if I were in your shoes, but that don't make me any less ticked off, 'specially since we managed to save your hide."
Salvador's surly attitude clearly conveyed he did not agree with your sacrifice either. Picturing your allies mourning your death created a warm feeling from your Stigma -- or rather, where it used to be. That false brand of evil was also gone. However, when your thoughts turned to the floating castle and the unchanging absence of Belgantier, you were overcome with melancholy again.
The four Void Stars around it, though having served their purpose, continued to shine. The one to the east returned to its original position as well. At long last, the world she created would be filled with light. Your fated clash against Zylgan had concluded, but the fighting was not over. If his loyal remnants were ignored, they would spread darkness anew. You could not allow that to happen. For her sake, you swore to preserve Contratellus' newly gained peace. Wearing that determination like a mark of justice, you set out once more, side by side with your allies.
"Let's go south, Hero! That was where the Lightholders first headed after the battle!"
