Prologue

In the remote southwest reaches, there was a small village that served as the center of the Domal warrior tribe. Its people shared not a common bloodline but a commitment to battle, making them closer to a military organization. After reaching adulthood, young men and women left to become vagrant mercenaries, only returning after age, illness, or injury rendered them unable to fight. Although these retirees would take up roles such as physician or blacksmith, they were still experienced veterans, so no one dared to provoke the village.

Thus, you initially found the rumor that bodies had been stolen from the Domal graveyard hard to believe. It was true their dangerous customs resulted in daily funerals, leaving many fresh corpses to exhume, but one would have to be foolhardy to take them.

The Domal worshipped not a deity, but the concept of war itself. Morality was left to personal judgment and largely inconsequential. Their heroes fought in the biggest battles or against incredible odds instead of for any particular cause. For that reason, it was not unusual for both sides in a conflict to hire Domal soldiers. Their shared origin held no meaning on the battlefield; they would battle to the death as long as they stood under opposing banners. As such, they were highly prized as mercenaries... and highly feared as enemies.

To steal anything from the Domal was inconceivable, but to disturb their comrades laid to eternal rest after a glorious end meant the responsible party would meet a fate far worse than death. This led you to assume the culprit was extremely confident they could handle the consequences.

The incensed Domal were already tearing through the wilderness in search for the violator. If their blind fury caused them to overstep their bounds, it was very possible they would set off a war. You deemed it necessary to investigate and intervene to prevent that.

With some clever thinking and a stroke of luck, you discovered the perpetrator was a woman named Siradze. She was a sorceress who had given refuge to demons fleeing a power struggle in their homeland. They traveled in her flying fortress known as the Dark Skyhall, with numbers enough to form a considerable fighting force, and it seemed her plans also concerned the Domal...

Epilogue

Your investigation of the Domal grave robberies led you to believe a sorceress named Siradze was responsible. She had taken the freshly buried bodies of the warriorlike tribe to reanimate as her own soldiers, all to gain supremacy in a power struggle among demon lords. Fortunately, there was no need to search for her; she came to you in her flying fortress, the Skyhall. As you grappled with her demon forces, the Lightholders also joined the battle, spreading chaos across the wilderness.

Siradze was undoubtedly carrying out the resurrection ritual in her stronghold while you were immersed in combat. The fact she had chosen corpses from the infamous Domal meant she posed a terrible threat. You could not allow her plan to succeed, but no sooner did you drive back the Lightholders than you saw it was already too late.

The Skyhall settled on the ground, opened its gates, and unleashed a legion of undead Domal warriors. Despite their rotting forms, they exuded palpable aggression from beneath the black armor the sorceress gave them. The swords held in their hands swung with the steady rhythm of trained veterans yet glinted madly.

Your breath caught in your throat. Even in a best case scenario, confronting them head-on would leave you with severe injuries. Death did not change that they were warriors of Domal. However, this hinted that they held the same reverence for the customs of war.

The Domal normally cared little about a battle's purpose, but anyone who dared violate their honor as warriors was unworthy of their help. As you tried to explain the situation and remind them of their creed, Siradze's loud laughter rang out from above.

"Hahaha! You think you can talk to the dead? They're now nothing more than empty dolls, servants that fight at my command! Give it up!"

Yet one by one, the Domal soldiers knelt to the ground. Armor and swords clattered loud as their flesh dissolved.

"Wh-what is the meaning of this?!"

In a panic, Siradze immediately chanted the resurrection spell again but to no avail. Already their bones were crumbling into dust. Your instinct was correct; they were noble warriors to the end. Rather than be forced to fight for one who did not revere the rules of combat, they would preserve their pride by choosing eternal slumber.

"Worthless! Totally worthless!"

With that, the incensed sorceress and the Skyhall departed into the sky and over the horizon. It seemed possible she would still join the demons' war for dominance, but without her secret weapon, she had no hope of triumph. The only ones who would know true victory valued honor and dignity, like the Domal.
