Community concensus takes too long and if it even happens it takes too long to be reflected in the guide. If I see cards selling regularly at the prices I edit in, then I am not going to wait for community concensus to do so. Sedna was listed at 350 for an RM, and want to know what she actually sells for? Roughly half that. Time for community concensus on that change? Never would have happened. Want to know why almost no one uses this guide for prices? Because almost NONE of the prices are accurate to the market. Let the market edit the prices and guess what! People will start using this again!
Community consensus does take a long time. However, if we started letting individuals edit the prices freely, abuse tends to happen where people start manipulating prices for their own benefit. And sure enough, it's happened in the past.
Community consensus helps avoid that problem through discussion. Yes, the price guides are out of date as a result, but they were only meant to be used as a rough guide anyway. And in that way, they do work to a certain extent.
As far as I'm concerned, it's better for the price guides to be out of date than to be intentionally misleading to people.
