Prologue[]
The Anthill thieves were an enigma. Only their existence and methodology were known outside the group. They left practically no evidence, and their victims never realized they had been robbed. As the name implied, they laid the groundwork unseen then swiftly and effortlessly carried away anything of value. This information, scant as it was, came through the efforts of young and upcoming historian, Count DeGalgen. He found the first clues while writing a biography of swordsman Burt Horne.
Sixty years ago, an unprecedented snowstorm swept the northern lands. Burt had discovered ice demons were responsible and dispatched the threat. His actions saved countless lives, so the king awarded him a fortune in gold, silver, and other treasures. However, that was when his story turned tragic.
The taciturn Burt's study of the blade was born of his wary nature. Experience in war and bloodshed also exposed him to betrayal in many forms. Feeling justified in his paranoia, he accepted this newfound wealth as the only "reliable friend" he had, and he was loath to part with it. Every single coin was stored in a grand estate he built deep in a forest where he could keep them safe from burglars and swindlers.
Such behavior was unseeming of a courageous 'hero', so the most famous tale ended at him receiving the reward. The rest became half-myth, largely unconfirmed before being forgotten. No one knew with any certainty how he lived out his final years.. until Count DeGalgen.
He drew upon his talent for research to investigate every possible lead, funded by his great-grandfather's mining fortune. During the countless hours of reading, correspondence, and interviews, some curious details rose to the surface.
Burt lived a surprisingly long life, passing away from illness only several years ago in a small temple. The monk who cared for him had no idea about his past exploits; he knew the enfeebled warrior as a humble, lonely soul.
"Sometimes he would mutter in delirium that his estate was filled with riches until he was told to give everything away. Apparently, it was too dangerous to hold onto it..."
Guided by the monk's testimony along with royal records of Burt's reward, DeGalgen searched for the one who convinced Burt to relinquish his treasures as well as their whereabouts. Shockingly, those articles were now among the wares of various art dealers. When asked how they came into their possession, many responded that they were bought from servants of Burt's estate. Sometimes it was a gardener, others a cook or butler. Although possible a single person operated under several identities, each bauble no doubt originated from their master.
DeGalgen traced the winding routes of every last item. Were it not for his expertise, painting a clear picture would have been impossible since more than a few passed through black market auctions. It was fairly common to hear of servants selling their master's belongings, but black markets only accepted auction lots from trusted underworld members. Therefore, it was obvious the servants either had connections to or were seasoned outlaws.
It stood to reason Burt was unable to care for his estate in his later years and employed a helper. It was also believable he grew tired of loneliness and, glad for the conversation, trusted this servant including whoever they recommended to hire. In his eyes, they were no different from friends. This meant that when they eventually told him bandits were eyeing his treasure, and he should give them up or risk being killed, he did not doubt them in the slightest. Thus, the outcome of dedicating himself to a temple owning only the clothes on his back was plausible.
DeGalgen next looked for other wealthy figures who experienced similar fates. Each additional case lent credibility to his theory of a mysterious robber group. He dubbed them 'Anthill' and wrote a detailed account of their scheme in Burt's biography. The book sold well. Readers were particularly taken by these stealthy operators and eager to learn more. The count then decided to write about the history of thievery focused around Anthill.
You were called as a reference due to your knowledge and dealings with many outlaws and crooks. He hoped you could provide enough hints to fully expose the gang. However, there was a sudden turn of events when you were dispatched to a distant region to find a suspected affiliate. According to him, Anthill made a new burrow... in the manor of none other than Count DeGalgen.
Epilogue[]
You hurried back to Count DeGalgen's estate after learning Anthill had infiltrated it. True to expectations, the domestic workers attacked with very undomesticated weaponry the moment you entered. Everyone from the cook to the gardener to the servants possessed highly polished combat skills, making their affiliation with the bandit group obvious.
One named Zereal, dressed as the head maid, was extremely dangerous. You deduced she was Anthill's leader, instilling a fear that the count had already been dispatched. However, each encounter with Zereal during your search caused that fear to weaken. Unlike the other raiders, she was not motivated by greed. Rather, you felt a very familiar sensation behind the deadly precision of her bladestrokes: the desire to protect a loved one.
......
"The count's right over there -- unharmed, naturally. We have a little system where he runs for his special hiding place whenever I shout a warning."
A relaxed Zereal stood in front of you, grinning as she looked at the south tower through the nearby window. Indeed, you saw Count DeGalgen waving enthusiastically. "I could've sworn you were here to rob him blind."
Muttering to herself, she returned the count's wave. All tension was resolved now she knew you were his research assistants. "Heh, you should've said something a whole lot sooner."
According to her, there had been constant attempts to steal DeGalgen's fortune following your departure. He spent a considerable portion of it to fund his books, but the vault still held enough riches to draw attention. The popularity of Burt Horne's biography only compounded this.
"Well, I admit we were first to arrive. He was the one who exposed us, after all. Of course we'd be ticked off, and no better payback than to do to him what we did to ol' Burt."
She went on to explain how Anthill had existed since long ago. Leadership was largely decided by bloodline; she took over from her father, who took over from his father, and so on. As Count DeGalgen guessed, they would pose as ordinary servants and fill the staff list of wealthy households. In that way, they were able to ensure complete secrecy as they carried out their heists. However, their untold legend was revealed by the count's cleverness. This had been what incurred Zereal's wrath, but she could not bring herself to exact vengeance once the thieves were situated.
"I mean, you know what they say: love hits you when you least expect it."
Considering Count DeGalgen's gentle manner, ample wit, and undeniable charm, it was no surprise she fell for him. And given her position as Anthill's leader, her subordinates also fell in line.
"So... Yeah, there was a change in plans. Instead of stealing his stuff, we'd protect it. And to be honest, I've grown to like that name he came up for us. Makes me seem like the queen ant, eating the corpses of our enemies, you know?"
Zereal then suddenly glared at you. "I'm going to bring him out now, but you better not breathe a word of this conversation. For all he believes, he's living out the fantasy of a fling with a pretty maid."
You had been frozen in place by the sharp glint in her eyes, so she continued in a lower voice. "But keep helping with his investigations. We'll even fill in the blanks about any other underworld organizations if necessary. And before I forget, tell us about that guy who tipped you off about us. His age, his appearance, where you met... Haha, rough guesses are fine. We're always dealing with traitors who can't keep their heads down. That's why I'm going to drag him back to the nest.... and bite it off."
Convinced the count was safe, you were amazed by his sheer luck in attracting such a ruthless figure. However, if this brought a little more peace to the world, you could not complain.
