Prologue[]
Thousands of years ago, the god of judgment Zylgan was expelled from Neotellus when his own sister, goddess of harmony Belgantier, created the parallel realm of Contratellus to contain him. However, the flames of his wrath never quelled. Under human guise, he plotted revenge while exercising unchallenged authority as Emperor Ildanev.
The past few years saw his plan come perilously close to success, when monsters known as Stigmals crossed the border to spread their fearsome condition. In your quest to thwart that scheme, you received some unexpected help from a former imperial vassal. Lennegrid, freed from imprisonment solely to kill you, instead hinted the key to victory might lie in the empire's origins.
From what the Blessed Chalices already showed you, Zylgan's three allied clans -- the giants, the dragons, and the demons -- played a major role in Contratellus' past. The power struggle that broke out soon after they were sealed away was also when Ildanev first appeared. His dominance grew more and more apparent as their losses mounted, but he knew cooperation would be necessary to reach his ultimate goal. With the war's end. he gave a portion of the empire as well as a Blessed Chalice to each leader to demonstrate goodwill.
The giants received a small continent gouged out of the land and suspended in the sky, now known as Loftgygs. The demons received the resulting trench beneath Loftgygs, now known as Cadavus. The dragons received the sky itself, free to fly anywhere between the land and the Heavens. It seemed Ildanev had granted them self-governance, yet they were still subject to his command.
As for how the leaders accepted this quiet tyranny, that was easy to imagine from their descendants' keenness to join you. Indeed, the inceptive giant's words of "Return to the land at the soonest chance" was carved into the hearts of the later chiefs, including the current one Fudo, a crucial figure in your forces. Although brought to heel, all three tribes were no less determined to overthrow the emperor. If you learned what took place at the empire's formation, before the Chalices' records, you might also learn how they originally planned to stop him, or so Lennegrid guessed.
The final showdown would likely be in Ildanev's new capital, but with Ripley now revealed to be Ildanev, you needed some other advantage to compensate for the lost source of intel. To do that, you set out for a volcanic island in the middle of a raging sea. It was Inception Isle, the site where the three leaders admitted defeat and swore loyalty to Ildanev. You hoped to summon the island's goddess Kiralle who likely witnessed that event. Despite the circumstances, you doubted surrender came easy. If Ildanev possessed any kind of weakness, Kiralle would know. This anticipation motivated you for the harsh journey ahead.
The Stigma etched in your chest truly contained your beloved Belgantier's power of light and Lennegrid's forceful will. You held no doubt whatsoever that you stood for righteousness. Success in the trip to Inception Isle hung by a thread, but even when you found Ildanev had come to stop you, along with the Lightholders and one of your own Stigmalized allies, you would remain firmly on the path of justice.
Epilogue[]
You crossed the stormy seas to Inception Isle where a volcano belched endless streams of sulphur and smoke. Beside the merciless elements, you also had to contend with Ildanev commanding both his Lightholders and the Stigmalized chief of the giants, Fudo. The sight of your strongest comrade now your greatest threat struck profound fear. The contrast between his bravery in leading the giants of Loftgygs and his current state was unimaginable.
Even so, you did not face these dangers alone. Besides ever-present Elimval and Salvador, other members of your resistance league had joined you: Rooney, master Ripened Controller from Cadavus, and Yahqi, descendant of Elgan's demonic nobility and head of the Coppice Witches. She also called for Fudo's brother Kanever through her acquaintance Parsil.
While the two titans grappled, Yahqi had successfully summoned the island's avatar Kiralle. Inception Isle was where the demons, giants, and dragons surrendered to Ildanev, prompting the empire's establishment. However, it was believed the sequence of events leading to that was more complex than recorded. When you told as much to the goddess, she assented to the just cause of your request and revealed what she saw that fateful day...
......
"Demon, do you see the forces of Ildanev -- nay, Zylgan? Will the dragon arrive before they do? Does he understand what fate awaits us if he fails?"
A giant resembling Fudo glared at the sight ahead of him. The forest of the island was yet young, and the volcano at the center was far smaller. His body loomed over both the lava and the water as he watched the shadowy dots extending beyond the horizon. Ships and winged knights were approaching.
"Your guess is as good as mine. I told him to hurry, but I doubt he's smart enough to understand words at all." A voice came from giant's shoulder. It was the inceptive demon, evident from the sharp horns on both sides of his head.
"In any case, Ildanev will only accept our surrender if the three of us are together. We bow down to him on this island, or he'll destroy us with a bolt from that killing machine up there."
He was looking at the airship Karmada. It floated at a much lower altitude than you had ever seen it, perhaps due to the war which would not formally end for a few hours more. "Hmph, normally, I would rather die than obey another."
The giant also turned his glare upwards. "I find it hard to believe Belgantier created the Karmada..."
"Well, it came straight from one of her very own angels. If I hadn't gone through the effort of squeezing that little titbit out, we wouldn't be taking this gamble at all. It was supposed to be Belgantier's last resort, zapping her dear brother the moment he tried to break out of here."
The giant closed his eyes and sighed in response. "Yet he managed to seize it for himself. I resented her for trapping us in this world, but now I have only sympathy. She only went as far as his terror warranted."
"You actually resented her for that? She practically gave us our very own playground, waiting for us to do whatever we wanted. If it weren't for Zylgan..." The demon's eyes glimmered. He was clearly a monster at his core, showing no contrition after being banished from Neotellus.
"He's the real problem. I've never seen anyone so greedy, even among my own kind. Back in Neotellus, he told us we were going to split the land if we fought for him. This might not be what we had in mind, but he's totally going back on that promise."
The giant nodded in agreement. "A realm of his own he can rule as a human emperor to varnish over his ugly past, created by his sister. And regardless, he despises her so much he keeps her locked in that castle..."
"Nah, he doesn't hate her, he's afraid of her. The fact she made the Karmada proves she can try something else if he doesn't keep constant watch over her. That's why we had to agree to surrender so he'd actually leave."
"Knowing how your competitive spirit is stronger than those of us giants, I was surprised when you suggested we submit to him, but now I am impressed. You truly have the patience for a long-term plan if the reward is great enough."
"Cram it, I'm not stupid; I realized this was our only chance. We dragged Ildanev from the castle then had the dragon take the book Belgantier made while he's out. As long as he gets back in time, that tyrant will be none the wiser. All we need to do is put the book somewhere he can't find it."
"Where, exactly?"
"As the saying goes, no better place to hide a tree than the forest. Ildanev's got a huge library under construction, which will make the perfect spot."
"I see, but will that Book of Harmony or whatever actually help?"
"Sure as my horns are pointy. I told Belgantier through that angel: if there's a way to take back control of the Karmada, write it down. Turns out controlling it demands some incredibly strong light power, but she's in too much despair to overcome his. That's why I figured to have a record for future reference in case someone with the potential comes along. Of course, this all assumes the intense kickback doesn't kill them first."
"Wouldn't that make reclaiming it impossible? Besides, would anyone like that appear in a world under Ildanev's reign?"
"It's just part of the gamble. We could be waiting a decade, a century, even a millennium or five. But if someone who can make the impossible possible shows up, we win no matter how long it takes."
"Such a length of time boggles the mind, but I admit there is no other option. I only hope they show up before our passing."
"I highly doubt it, but all you have to do then is tell your kids. Keep the bloodline going, and they'll carry on your rage. I'll do the same. One day, far in the future, our descendants' strength will be needed. We'll bend the knee for now, but we'll never give up. Our determination will surpass time itself to help whoever comes to free us. The light will be our salvation."
The demon squinted again, then grinned wide. Besides the distant shadows of Ildanev's army, another plunged through the sky. Soon, a magnificent beard came into view, along with a book in clasped claws.
"They'll come to defeat Ildanev in our place, spouting some nonsense about justice... and they'll mean it."
......
"So? Did you find what you were seeking?" Kiralle's eyes burned with keen interest, drawn to your heart of righteousness. However, what you had just witnessed left you stunned amidst the chaos. It was a highly inappropriate time to be overawed -- your allies fought against Ildanev's army, and Kanever mustered all of his ability to dodge Stigmalized Fudo's frenzied bolts -- yet such was that revelation's weight. The Karmada's creator was none other than your beloved Belgantier.
Meant to be the ultimate measure against Zylgan, he wrested control of it to conquer the new world as Ildanev. Imagining the despair Belgantier felt tore at your heart seams. And another memory, perhaps forgotten in the trauma of the moment, emerged from your mind. Shortly before she passed, the goddess whispered as if delirious: "Find... the book..." She obviously meant the Book of Harmony, containing the way to retake her airship from Ildanev. Wondering why she did not tell you about it sooner, you concluded she was unsure if you would survive the life-threatening procedure.
The library mentioned in the vision was likely the Wehmkin Archive. You had visited it previously, stopping an incident where all of its volumes' pages were turning blank. Were it not for your help, an unfathomable amount of information would have been forever lost. A man in white was responsible, presumably to erase one particular tome. That was the Book of Harmony, and the man was Ripley, or Ildanev. The library's avatar, goddess of knowledge Eleight, promised you she would search for the book in question. Belgantier clearly wanted you to take it. She intended to kill her brother in order to help him, and that purpose was now yours.
"It appears you've come to a decision." Kiralle smiled at you before casting a sharp glare up at Fudo and Kanever, grapping over the volcano while the ground shook and crumbled.
"I don't like this. Those massive louts will end up crushing my volcano, the source of my energy. By nature I oppose interfering in warfare, but already this borders on calamity, so I will make an exception." She raised her arms, causing the magma to gush higher and changing its bloody red to a searing white. That towering pillar then engulfed the Stigmalized Fudo. When the glow subsided, his dignified form as the giants' leader returned. The power of natural light on Kiralle's island continued to spread, clearing out the dark miasma.
As the dragon-mounted Ildanev witnessed this, he showed not the slightest change in his stern expression. With only a glance in your direction, he gave the order to retreat. After the emperor vanished over the horizon, Kiralle smiled at you once more.
"I'll observe your bright flare of justice from here." She vanished in a cloud of smoke. With your irreplaceable comrade rescued and the enemy repelled, you made plans to take full advantage of the newly gained information. You would return to the Wehmkin Archive and retrieve the Book of Harmony.
