Eugenus knew only the maelstrom of battle. He who had been taught nothing else and had lived by no other means did not think of his opponent's standing before him as good or evil. There was but the mutual competition, the growth, and, at the end, the taking of life. If anything, Eugenus saw the savage barbarians who attacked the kingdom to be of the same mind; their fight merely a ritual of communion.

Eugenus is a masculine name of Old Greek origin; the meaning is "well-born, noble, noble aristocrat". Derived from eugenês "well born, noble", with the elements eu "good, well" and genos "birth, origin, descent". Original name was Eugenios (Old Greek) and Eugenius (Latin). Modern name is English and French Eugene.
