Prologue[]
The dragonkin busied themselves with preparations for the ceremony. A variety of weapons decked with colorful jewels lay neatly on the table while the airy sound of flutes swept over the grasslands. You watched as you stood alongside the leader of the Naral, one of the clans that would be taking part in the proceedings. They, who lived on land, would exchange decorated arms with their rivals, the Ladeux of the sky. It was a ritual held every few years, the final remnant of a de facto war lasting for centuries.
It originated when the quarrel of two brothers grew into a full-scale conflict. The younger, Ladeux, left to build a castle in the sky while the elder, Naral, remained on land. For the rest of their lives, they would clash in frequent skirmishes and compete in developing their respective domains.
However, this dispute between the clans soon vanished with their passing. No true combat had taken place in almost seven hundred years, and they even formed a trade agreement among other signs of goodwill. The ceremony was one of them, overseen by the heads of both clans. The idea was prolonging a peaceful war would prevent the outbreak of actual bloodletting. Perhaps somewhat paradoxical, but for all intents and purposes, it was a celebration of brotherhood.
Chief Naral had extended an invitation after you rescued his son from drowning. He had fallen into a river after an unfortunate encounter with monsters during an errand for the ceremony. You simply happened to be passing by and rescued him without a second thought. Though you felt you were undeserving of such a privilege, you were nonetheless interested in the unique nature of the event.
This time would also mark the first official affair for the new head of the Ladeux. Her name was Biswyn, so young and beautiful that many still called her 'Princess'. The Naral youths, abuzz with anticipation, went above and beyond in preparing for the post-ritual feast to impress her.
At last, the music faded and the chatter stopped. The reverent silence and the stately gleam of the weapons brought a solemn air to the field. Then, winged figures could be seen flying in the distance. They were the representatives of Ladeux, led by the fair Princess Biswyn. Of the many fine armaments they held, her sword was the most magnificent. Great shouts of admiration arose from the Naral as they approached.
You, however, were concerned. Not just Biswyn, but all of her entourage bore thinly veiled aggression on their faces -- ill-suited for a friendly ceremony. Unfortunately, their quickened pace left you with no time to warn anyone. You reached for the hilt of your sword just as they realized your grim expectations.
Biswyn, eyes aflame, hurled her blade at Chief Naral. Her followers were also poised for battle, making it clear they were elite soldiers rather than mere retainers. The dragonkin of the sky set upon their land-bound brethren, as if to remind them of that ancient grudge...
Epilogue[]
"Is that the truth?" Princess Biswyn's attacks came to a halt. It seemed something about your explanation intrigued her. Though she was not entirely convinced, she allowed you to elaborate upon what you had learned from Chief Nadal's son.
A traitorous magician had stoked Biswyn's aggression by claiming the people of Naral secretly distrusted the Ladeux, and he was expelled after refusing orders to place a curse on them. In actuality, he expressed such hatred against the Ladeux that Chief Naral felt compelled to exile him. This too was a part of his scheme -- it not only granted him a swift audience with the princess, a successful offensive would undermine the chief's reputation at the very least. By the time you finished revealing the circumstances, the furor in Biswyn's eyes had given way to heartfelt regret.
"I'm such a fool. I should've realized something was strange when he knew nothing of his own army's strength." She allowed herself just a moment's sorrow before reigniting her gaze and bolting away to hunt for her target. When she found it, her whole body trembled with rage.
"You foul wretch...!" With a fearsome cry, she plunged sharply towards a figure scrambling to escape. It was the magician, who had hid behind a nearby cliff to watch his machinations unfold. After a few moments, all that remained of him was a mangled corpse.
Then, still covered in vengeful red stains, Biswyn knelt deeply before Chief Naral. "The Ladeux are not at fault. Responsibility for this act of aggression belongs to me alone, as it was I who believed those groundless falsehoods. I have no right to beg for mercy, but please let my life alone be penance enough..."
Biswyn, who had only recently come into power, was eager for an opportunity to prove herself, leading to rash action when presented with the magician's lies. Chief Nadal realized this and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"Princess Biswyn Ladeux, we exiled that villain for his unpardonable words, but this allowed him to sway you, so I must share some liability. However, instead of negotiating recompense, I propose that we declare a formal end to this perpetual war and make our two clans one yet again."
Biswyn burst into tears upon hearing his generous offer. "Chief Naral, my people are in your hands, and I swear life-long loyalty to you. May the dragonkin of the land and the skies live in harmony now and forevermore!"
After centuries, the never-ending 'war' had finally come to a close.
