Prologue[]
The small angel twins were alike in almost every way: the color of their eyes and how they glimmered in the sunlight, their rosy, cherubic cheeks, and even the arrangement of their delicate white wings. Only hair color and personality distinguished one from the other.
Flaxen-haired Emir, the elder by moments, was kind and responsible. Younger sister Hedir had silver hair and a taciturn, careful manner. Despite these differences, both shared an eloquence that demonstrated wisdom beyond their years.
As if united by soul, they worked inseparably alongside other angels in aiding the gods' affairs, on occasion retreating into a distant corner to trade whispers. Emir was often first to speak, and one day, she raised a terrifying subject.
"Do you believe she's truly a fallen angel?" She referred to the archangel who had just been sentenced to death on charges of blasphemy. Hedir replied in a low voice.
"If she is, she'll die today. Her wings have already started to turn black. There's no excusing that."
"Oh dear..."
All angels were susceptible to a condition that caused mistrust of the gods to manifest as darkening wings. Emir's brow furrowed. Once fond of the convict and her beautiful smile, those memories now seemed tainted by sin. She shook her head to clear away the discomfort as Hedir continued unaware.
"Still, I'm curious as to why would she decide to rebel. What fault did she find with the gods? What was it about the demons that appealed to her?"
"Yet asking questions like that too is blasphemy."
Hedir saw meaning in logic and believed dispelling doubts was important. She entered her own little world while absorbed in thought, but Emir was always aware of her surroundings... and especially Hedir. Each time her interests veered in a dangerous heading, Emir would correct her course. This fascination in fallen angels too required action.
"What if we go watch the execution together? When she sees the wages of treachery, that should scare her for quite a while."

Ten years later, in the courtroom of the heavenly palace, the judge angel's voice echoed coldly. "I sentence Hedir to execution for her crime of blasphemy."
Sitting at the defendant's table, Hedir's silvery hair could not distract from her half-darkened wings. Her cheeks had changed as well, drained of their youthful color.
"Why? I won't allow this!" Emir's protests from the witness stand rang out even after the judge left the room. The older twin's cheeks still glowed red, and her wings were unblemished. She had claimed her sister could not be a fallen angel with every breath, but Hedir's black feathers were incontrovertible evidence.
"Stop! Let go of me!"
Seeing Hedir be carried away, an old memory resurfaced in Emir's mind.
The day when an angel they knew was executed.
The falling axe and the dropping blood.
The stunning river of red.
"I don't know why you let this happen, Hedir, but I won't let you die!"
Epilogue[]
The convicted angel Hedir fled from the trial and descended to the mortal realm far below. However, this was not her decision; resignation had been plain upon her face since entering the courtroom. Rather, the one responsible was her twin sister Emir. She managed to free her en route to the execution site, all assuming she merely wanted to save her sibling's life.
Having been called to help apprehend the pair, you observed their close bonds while pursuing on a winged horse. A painful melancholy lingered even after they eluded you among the clouds...

Falling from the sky as they fell from grace, Emir spread her wings around Hedir. Hedir's, in contrast, flapped wildly as if trying to escape. The entangled twins spun wildly as they continued their plunge. Meanwhile, the traitorous black plumage scattered in the wind, prompting a shout from Emir.
"I knew those were false feathers! You only pretended to be a blasphemer! Why would you do such a thing?!"
"How could you not know why when the answer is obvious?!" Hedir screamed in response, giving Emir pause. She had never heard her sister raise her voice before. Hedir took that opportunity to elaborate.
"I did it to protect you! I'd rather die than watch you face the same punishment!"
The fake feathers were completely blown away, returning Hedir's wings to their pure white beauty. Conversely, Emir's began to darken. Hedir looked on with despondency; her twin was indeed a fallen angel.
"You clearly can't control your evil impulses any more. In fact, you escaped with me in order to hide that." Emir's breaths grew shorter and shorter, and her eyes clouded with red. This panicky reaction resembled a demon whose identity was exposed. She spoke between gasps.
"How? When did you notice?"
"From that day I saw your gaze transfixed to the blood of the executed fallen angel." Hedir stared deep into Emir's scarlet pupils.
"Surely you remember whispering how you found it stunningly beautiful. That was when I realized there was no turning back for you."
Ever since, Hedir lived in anxiety. When Emir heard a sad story, her eyes would flash the same red shade. She sought out the fleeting beauty in brutal or tragic events. Only her twin seemed to be aware of these changes.
Despite that, she could not correct Emir's inclinations. They grew more and more pronounced until the tips of her feathers began to turn black. She could suppress those thoughts enough to hide it in public, but there would come a day when that would prove impossible. Before then, Hedir decided to pose as a fallen angel herself as a last resort. She held onto the faint hope that her own death would clear the wicked tendencies from her sister's heart.
"But even if I did die, you wouldn't have repented." Hedir whispered sadly. Emir's wrings were now entirely black, and her eyes shone bright crimson. She was no longer sane.
"Please, regain your holy nature. I'm begging you."
She tried one final attempt, bringing her lips to Emir's and forcefully breathing in her own divinity to drive out the darkness. Perhaps in resistance, Emir exhaled demonic air back into Hedir. This exchange of good and evil had the side effect of draining all color from their hair, turning it white.
Falling from the sky as they fell from grace, their aggressive kiss continued as they neared the ground...

Some time after the twins vanished through the clouds, you reached the end of their trajectory. There you saw the remains of a single angel. It had white wings, white hair, and tear-stained eyes. Although you initially thought it was Emir, you recalled how the color of both angels' wings fluctuated as if they had traded them. Hedir's became white and Emir's black. Whatever caused this, you did not know the details.
The bewildering sight of another angel flying nearby with the same face as the dead one offered no help. Her wings and hair too were as pure as ivory, and tears fell from her clear eyes. She wore an absent-minded expression that told any attempt at communication would be futile.
Which was Emir and which was Hedir was indistinguishable. The only conclusion was that their sisterly bond had triumphed over evil, though at the cost of one's life. The surviving angel eventually wandered into the distance, away from the heavenly temple. Her divinity had been spared, but instinct told you she would never return home.
