It happened on a beautiful starry night. Dunia was first aware that something was amiss when her older brother was late in returning from his usual rounds in the forgotten lands. She normally had no need to worry, for her brother’s magical prowess matched his unbound behavior. However, feeling a strange uneasiness in her heart, she went out in search of him. Her intuition was correct, for she found his cold, pale body. As she waited in despair, her rage and sorrow instantly formed a relentless thunderstorm, sending lightning across the sky.

Dunia is a feminine name of Arabic origin; the meaning is "world; life". Derived from the Arabic word dunyā, it means the temporal world—and its earthly concerns and possessions—as opposed to the eternal spiritual realm, or the hereafter (ākhira). Dunyā most literally means "closer" or "lower".
