Drowning Lamentation is a Raid Event scheduled to start on March 1, 2020 at 7:00 PM (PST) and end on March 7, 2020 at 7:00 PM (PST). It is the ninety fifth episode of the Dark Stigma story and forty eighth in the Malice Canon storyline.

Prologue[]
"Do you see up there? That's the royal memorial." From the black robe emerged an aged, crooked finger belonging to the royal magician of Adrazzo. It pointed to a small knoll in the distance that was your destination. Coming into view of the entrance after she led you, there was a thick mist that poured out of it. No more obvious sign could be given that it was a monsters' den.
"Oh dear... Are you certain the princess is in such a terrifying place?" Elimval asked with a tinge of fearful doubt in her voice.
"For the last fifty years or so. She's Princess Zelstora, the aunt of the current king. Unfortunately, she was turned into some mysterious creature." With those words, she began to recount the sad, secret tragedy of the Adrazzo line.
Fifty years ago, when the king was still young, the country was beset by a string of ghastly happenings. During every royal ball, an honor guest from a nearby country would die. It was initially seen as coincidental until the same poison was discovered in each victim's drink. An investigation was carried out, leading to the accusation of an unlikely figure: none other than Princess Zelstora. One of the ministers presented a bottle of the poison used in the killings that he said was found in her chambers. When pressed for an explanation, the princess only responded with a blank stare. This naturally caused her to be deemed insane.
The evidence seemed decisive, but a few pieces of the puzzle were missing. Regardless, Adrazzo knew they had to declare a culprit or face a diplomatic nightmare. With a heavy heart, the king watched his own daughter tried and sentenced. He could only ask for her to be drowned in a small lake behind the castle to prevent making a complete spectacle of the affair. "But none of us, least of all myself, knew kelpies lived in it, to say nothing of its connection to the memorial."
The magician trembled beneath her robe. Kelpies were water sprites resembling horses that preyed upon humans by dragging them below the surface. They had skillfully hid themselves in the lake for untold years, and instead of eating Zelstora, it seemed they decided to befriend her. They even went as far as to share with her their power.
This was the conclusion after scattered reports of people seeing her face beneath the water's surface years after her execution, unchanged from the day she died. To stem the flow of rumors, the royal family forbade anyone from approaching it. However, Zelstora later appeared in a more unexpected place, the royal memorial, via an underground river.
"This is the site of our centennial celebration when we pray for prosperity. It's also where the key artifact for the main ritual is enshrined, the Blade Crystal." The sharp edge of the Blade Crystal could purportedly sever curses, making it essential for the ritual's success.
"We recently sent ten soldiers to do the preliminary inspection. All but one returned alive, severely traumatized. He said Zelstora and her kelpie friends killed the other nine. None of us knew what to do, so I thought to ask for your help since I had heard rumors of your brave exploits. If you succeed, we'll be forever in your debt."
You asked if the Blade Crystal would be needed to defeat the transformed Zelstora, but she replied by handing you a willow branch. "That should be all you need. We found out she never approached the lake near the willow trees, so we planted them all around the edge. I see no reason why it wouldn't serve you here as well."
Epilogue[]
Fifty years ago, one of Adrazzo's ministers presented evidence that led to the resolution of the serial murder mystery. That same man's family crest was burned into the nape of the neck of the accused, Zelstora. The minister was not only of royal descent but demonic as well, so his ancestral symbol was suitably macabre -- a skeletonized ouroboros. Coincidentally, its design bore a striking resemblance to the pattern of a willow branch coiled into a ring.
You finally realized Zelstora was not showing an aversion to the plant, but the minister's crest. The brand on her neck was in all likelihood the mark of a curse. You did not yet know the reason why, but since she was reportedly deemed insane at the time of the initial accusation, you believed the curse was placed prior to that. With that revelation, you swiftly seized the Blade Crystal from the nearby altar, circled behind Zelstora, and pressed the blunt side of the gem into her neck. The memorial then immediately flooded with a holy light...

You left the memorial with Zelstora, now freed from the spell. The aged magician was aghast at the sight, but you convinced her to listen to the princess' pitiful tale. As she did, she fell to the ground weeping, unable to bear the truth of the matter. The minister's royal lineage did not make him immune to criticism. Indeed, all of the victims were key figures who voiced concern of his unjust actions in the past. Worried they would threaten his ambitions, he killed them. Zelstora unwittingly discovered his actions, but before she could inform anyone, he used her bewilderment to place a cursed brand upon her. This stole her rationality and made her unaware of her own actions. Thus, she took the blame for his crimes... and was cast into the lake.
Even in her insanity, the last fragments of will deep inside her heart angrily demanded justice. Alas, her disturbed mental state was still sensitive to the minister, including the willow branches that resembled his unfurled crest. Her only allies were the kelpies who offered their help out of sympathy.
As she struggled to fight the curse of madness, her rage built until she could bear it no more. She used a secret channel from the lake to the royal memorial to find the Blade Crystal, but she happened upon the soldiers preparing for the centennial ceremony. The curse's power made them regard her as a deadly threat, so she had to kill them out of self-defense. She never meant to do harm, but they would not let her near the Blade Crystal otherwise. Her wounds from that battle had only just recovered when you entered the memorial.
"It's awful how much she had to go through. And the worst part is the minister has probably passed away by now, so he can't even pay for his deeds." Elimval's glum remark elicited a knowing twinkle in the eyes of the black-robed magician.
"Actually, he's still alive, even chosen to lead the centennial ceremony. But he's over a hundred years old and has one foot in the grave already. I reckon one glance at Princess Zelstora will be more than enough to do him in."
......
The magician's words proved to be true. Zelstora was brought before the decrepit minister, and he perished in a convulsive fit.
The returned princess then stated her desire to hold a service for the soldiers she slew in her cursed state. That noble contrition was enough to earn her the privilege of conducting the centennial celebration in place of the deceased minister. There was no better demonstration that her honor was restored.
As for the lake behind the castle, it became a haven for kelpies. Zelstora would often be seen there in times of leisure to chat with her friends. It seemed unlikely they would harm another human for as long as she lived.
The tragic princess who was beset by injustice and madness had been freed from her cursed past. Never again would she suffer in silence at the bottom of a murky lake.
