Austin is an English and German masculine name of Latin origin; the meaning "august, dignified, holy". It is derived from the element augustus which means "to increase". The name initially developed as a medieval short form of the Roman nickname Augustinus (Latin). It was later adopted as a surname, which in turn led to the survival and use of Austin as a given name.
