Prologue[]
The midwestern kingdom of Aprodol was the origin point of the Windtrail Tales, an anthology by a nameless author. Its overarching theme was how people were connected by downdrafts that flowed from the mountain range along the border into the hilly hamlets then across the central capital.
Drama between lovers, vengeance between classes, joy and tragedy between friends and family -- all fictional in nature but woven with realistic detail. Among hundreds of stories featuring a cast of well over a thousand characters, fans could not hope to agree on a favorite, but the strangest was obvious: Nido the Nightrobe.
Always in his black cloak, Nido appeared in more than half of the Tales. Many encounters were in or near a tavern of some kind. Other times, he was leading a horse at dawn or asking for a drink of water in the market. His presence merely served to set the scene rather than advance the plot, as if representing the strange coincidences of everyday life. However, he left an almost unnervingly strong impression because whenever he actually spoke, these ominous words would come from his mouth:
"This world will be annihilated when the great dragon Aragulz breathes his all-consuming Flames of the End."
Regardless of this augury, none of the characters paid any heed to him, further magnifying his strangeness. Scholars figured he symbolized the impermanence of the physical world. Some thought he was the main character of the original first story that was excised before publishing for reasons unknown, along with his presence in others. Evidence for this theory came from his strong resemblance to a real historical figure, Dorzol the Castleless King, who lived in same timespan as the collection.
Dorzol hailed from a small neighboring region. His castle was burned soon after taking the throne, causing the nobility, servants, and people to refuse him as a ruler. Effectively deposed, he became a hermit wandering the nearby forest in a dirty black cloak. It was said he always ranted about incinerating the world in his next life as retribution.
Purportedly, the Windtrail Tales was supposed to open with a story based on him only for it to be too chilling for the final version. Whatever the case, as long as the fact remained that the events were fictional, it was of no actual consequence.
Yet when a cult discovered the egg of the dragon mentioned by Nido, everything changed...
Epilogue[]
The stories of the Windtrail Tales were fictitious, but a cult believed that Nido the Nightrobe, strangest among the cast of characters, truly existed. Its readers could never forget his trademark phrase. "This world will be annihilated when the great dragon Aragulz breathes his all-consuming Flames of the End."
Those Flames of the End were assumed to represent divine judgment, a means of cleansing and regenerating the world. Under Ashendal's leadership, the cult sought out the egg of Aragulz to make his words become reality. Their zealotry for such a morbid goal earned them many enemies, but no amount of confrontation stopped them from achieving it.
The egg was finally found deep inside a volcano amid the mountain chain from which the anthology's titular winds were formed. When Ashendal first announced its discovery, few accepted her claim. However, doubt rapidly vanished as she marched her congregation towards the kingdom's center, egg held aloft in defiance.
Its aura was clearly ominous, if not by its appearance then by how it drew monsters. They joined Ashendal's parade of violence, spreading havoc and anguish in their wake while she chanted to hasten the egg's incubation. Dark clouds also gathered in the sky and twisted into a dragon's shape as if portending the advent of Aragulz. Apprehension among the populace changed to despair, and chaos gripped the capital.
That very capital was the cult's destination. Ashendal intended for Aragulz to emerge outside of its gates, allowing for a swift capture. It would then serve as the origin point for the Flames of the End purging the entire world. Grasping the severity of the situation, the king contacted you for urgent assistance. You were to aid the royal army in stopping Ashendal's advance and the hatching of Aragulz.
......
"And I was so certain this attempt would succeed..." Those were the last words of Ashendal, defeated in a pitched battle. The cult's rampage also ceased, and the black clouds soon dispersed. The egg of Aragulz, once proudly hoisted high, fell to the ground and shattered. After its fragments dissolved into the soil, the tense atmosphere over the kingdom gave way to tranquility. It seemed the whole affair would become a mere footnote in history as an attempted coup.
Still, her final utterance stuck in your mind for several days since leaving Aprodol. With much thought, you realized it matched a familiar saying of Dorzol the Castleless King, the bygone figure presumed to be Nido's inspiration, almost verbatim. Yet even if he had been truly reborn as Ashendal to destroy the world, it did not change how the original reference to Aragulz was from a fictional character. This meant there was never any threat of an apocalyptical calamity.
Regardless of everything, Ashendal's actions nearly ruined an entire nation. The fact that she would have fulfilled Dorzol's wish hundreds of years later made it all the more chilling...
