Sailors who lose their way at sea on cloudy nights are protected and guided by the goddess Petra. Her shining sphere of water offers support and instills courage to those troubled by the dark. If the saved journeymen linger by the water after reaching the shore, they may catch a glimpse of her loveliness.

Petra is a shortened form of Petronella, the Greek name meaning "small rock" and a Latin name meaning "of the Roman clan Petronius". It is a feminine form of Peter.
