Ancient Fragments is a Raid Event scheduled to start on April 1, 2023 at (8:00 PM (PST/PDT) and end on April 7, 2023 at 8:00 PM (PST/PDT). It is the one hundred sixty ninth episode of the Dark Stigma story and eighty fifth in the Malice Canon storyline.

Half-time Reward Calculation Period is at April 3, 2023 from 8:00 PM to 8:59 PM (PST/PDT).

Prologue[]

Not a single one of the cells within Ladart's vast dungeon held a human prisoner; neither were they locked. Clammy air drifted as aimless as the beastly inhabitants. Whereas a quiet dungeon normally meant a peaceful, law-abiding country, in Ladart's case, it was the opposite. So many were convicted that it became more practical to execute than incarcerate them. This was unavoidable under the reign of King Dax the Second.

After taking the throne seven years ago, Dax placed strict regulations over minor, everyday activities. Lighting candles, singing songs, or even choosing one's outfit demanded close attention to these rules. Additionally, he encouraged anonymous reporting of infractions, leading neighbors to expose each other. Everyone from cheerful innkeepers to five-year-old children were carried away, never to be seen again.

Arrests were handled by the Disciplinary Force, and their leader, Emanea, served as executioner. People feared the very mention of her name. She had been granted the post three years ago and sent innumerable people to their doom ever since.

Emanea walked past the empty chambers, gazing sidelong through the bars. She stopped at the center then looked down at her weapon, a glowing blue sickle attached to a winding chain. She wondered how many lives it had taken. Certainly more than a thousand or two...

Reflecting on her past, she recalled the pride she felt upon her appointment to head of the Disciplinary Force. The king himself had graciously selected her above everyone else, setting her heart atop a stream of hot, passionate wind. Days of dreary toil had become a distant memory. That wind continued to blow even now, but she recently felt fragments also dancing within it, and like glass their edges scored the walls of her heart.

That pain began one month prior. The wind cooled but did not weaken, forcing the jagged pieces to strike over and over. When the suffering grew unbearable, she would stave it off with medicinal liquor provided by the king. That would restore her to prime condition the following day, but she was through ignoring the root cause. She had come to the lonely underground space to determine why those fragments tortured her so.

Taking hold of the blue blade with her free hand, she slowly squeezed it. Blood silently coursed down her wrist. This physical pain brought focus to her mind, scattered by the pain in her heart. As crimson blotches formed on the stone ground, she shut her eyes and probed with all of her might.

"Fragments, show me your original shape."

Slowly by surely, they interlocked until the truth was revealed...

Epilogue[]

The sharp fragments floating around Emanea's heart slowly reassembled into a forgotten image. The sight of it made her forget the pain from gripping the blade... then turn its blue edge upon King Dax the Second. Since being appointed as captain of the Disciplinary Force, she was a loyal subject who executed countless convicts. However, the truth revealed that allegiance was built on lies, and the seemingly dull days before then were nothing of the sort.

The rage bursting from within threatened to consume her whole. His deception had driven her to commit atrocities equal to the number of lives she had taken. She could not even begin to consider making amends until she eliminated the one responsible. Hiding in the castle dungeon after her first assassination attempt, she barely contained herself while waiting for her plan to play out...

An unfamiliar figure approached Emanea -- someone she least expected: an ally. She produced a small glass vial from a pocket and threw it at the cold floor between you. A puddle of red fluid formed among the pieces, releasing a sweet pungency.

"That's the cause of everything. The king gave it to all the Disciplinary Force members, saying it was medicinal liquor. Actually, it's a brainwashing potion secretly formulated by the royal magic labs." Although shocking, it was undoubtedly true considering her high rank, and it undoubtedly meant the king wanted to silence her for good. That she shared this dangerous fact was a sign you finally won her trust. Through repeated attacks, you made it clear you were not a mercenary in King Dax's employ but a warrior of justice with a shared goal. The firm look in your eyes lent further credence.

Her gaze fixed on the broken bottle, Emanea spoke gravely. "The first time I tasted that brew was three years ago."

She was a former undercover agent of a rapidly growing movement against King Dax the Second. After being exposed, she was forced to imbibe the brainwashing potion during the torture process. It removed all aversion towards the current order and heightened her sense of loyalty to the king. As her memories of the past blurred, resolve towards her new duty strengthened even further. She was not merely accepting of the oppressive regime -- she proudly participated in it. However, she had only ever known of the drink as 'medicinal liquor'. 

Moreover, it was likely many other freedom fighters were forcibly conscripted into the enemy ranks, just as she had suddenly become the captain of the Disciplinary Force. Unfortunately, the brainwashing left her unable to recognize any of them. They might even be part of king's personal guard. This meant carrying out vengeance could bring greater sacrifice.

"The soldiers I've drawn here are Ladart's elite squadron. Once I've thinned out their numbers, I plan to attack the magic labs before the king can put it under lockdown. If I don't capture it, it'll be practically impossible to stop him. Are you ready for another tough fight?"

You nodded, then she looked down at the bottle again. The scattered pieces reflected the torture chamber from when she was first made to drink the potion. She managed to knock one flask to the ground during the struggle. It was the last thing she remembered seeing in her right mind, and it somehow remained in her subconscious. They took the form of fragments inside of her heart, damaging it in a desperate attempt to shake off that violent trance.

"Hurry, we need to lure the soldiers deeper inside." Kicking aside the glass, she led you down the row of cells.

With your aid, Emanea overthrew the king's absurd rule. Inside of a month, Dax the Second was beheaded. The freedom fighters of Ladart who had continued their work after Emanea's capture quickly established a new administration. However, she was nowhere to be found within it.

Her comrades were sympathetic, but she still felt deep self-resentment for spilling innocent blood. The night of Dax's execution, she took a sliver of the broken bottles and fatally cut herself. Her last wish was forgiveness for her unpardonable sin...
