Prologue[]
A massive floating island was where the kingdom of Reithnidd could be found. There lived the descendants of legendary dragon Igrude who revered him as a god. They were taught his story from infancy, and it was no exaggeration to say that faith in him formed the basis of their nation.
In ancient times, humans had been granted stewardship over the land by the gods, but they shortsightedly waged wars of control. For ruining the peace of their creation, the enraged gods attempted to destroy them with droughts, floods, and other widespread disasters.
That was when Igrude came to mankind's sole aid. He proclaimed true blame lied with the gods by giving humans the capability for disobedience and intended to rescue them. Many climbed aboard his expansive back, then he evacuated them to the sky. They ultimately landed upon the island where his nation and lineage started.
However, everyone who lived on the ground beneath Reithnidd regarded him as a wicked monster instead of a kind savior. According to them, their ancestors were attacked by those first to mount Igrude despite there being ample space.
Moreover, Igrude himself breathed fire at the stragglers, adding distress to already hopeless conditions. Even after settling on the island, he repelled whoever followed with winged creatures, and he continued to raid the lands below for as long as he lived. The fact many folk tales and songs depicted him as a menace could be seen as proof of his aggression across history.
No matter how vehemently the people of Reithnidd disavowed those claims, animosity festered between the people of land and sky. It was also the cause of their diplomatic and political isolation. They were even excluded from a protective alliance against raids by flying demons, and the ground-dwellers merely called it richly deserved karma.
The current ruler, Queen Marigaldi, could no longer tolerate such treatment. Besides being forced to fight on their own, she ardently believed their treatment of Igrude was the height of insolence. In order to amend their reputation and remove their disgrace, she declared her intent to summon him back from the underworld. Shocking though this was, it would prove beyond all doubt that he was a creature of genuine compassion and wisdom.
"Once they behold his nobility, they'll have no choice but to admit the error of their ways." Fully convinced her judgment was sound, she started the resurrection ritual. As desired, his massive frame again appeared in this world... but not in the manner she pictured.
Epilogue[]
Pain like that of flesh tearing from bone finally woke Queen Marigaldi from her madness. Too dazed even to breathe, her only movements were subconscious, and they still intensified her agony. The realization she was lying on the ground below her domain of Reithnidd was joined by the recollection of recent events, and her eyes winced shut.
The insanity brought about by Igrude had somehow removed her soul from her body, giving her an aerial view of the tragedy. The dragon descended to the lower nations and his flames incinerated the enemy soldiers. The scent of boiling blood pleased him, but she wailed like an infant who had lost her favorite toy. That memory now tormented her physical mind.
She opened her eyelids again and was taken aback by the bright blue sky. The sky from the island seemed to absorb everything indiscriminately, but this one had a gentle, merciful hue. Newly aware she never visited the ground since taking the throne, regret for her ignorance surged forth, and she could no longer restrain her tears.
The ancestral deity she revived was obviously evil. The cruelty, ferocity, and miasma contained within his massive frame was far from the supreme brilliance and dignity she expected. She observed the reason: a small but powerful magic circle of mind control on the center of his back. Her ancestors evidently placed it, forcing him to attack anyone not already on board.
She, through reawakening Igrude, had inadvertently brought the world to the brink of war. Were it not for you stabbing his heart after a leap from your flying horse, the worst would have come to pass. This very thought shook Marigaldi to her core. Death was too light a punishment for her transgression.
Just then, a new shadow covered her. She initially assumed it was an enemy soldier, but it was you, silently offering a hand of support.
......
Marigaldi of the flying island Reithnidd had revived the ancient dragon Igrude who caused widespread destruction. Regardless, her kingdom was admitted into the defensive alliance inside of a year. This was thanks to the efforts of two people: you and Marigaldi herself. After the calamity, she abdicated the throne to her niece and cut off both wings in penance. Then, you used your experience in fighting demons to locate their den and eliminate them. Both acts greatly impressed the member nations.
Marigaldi subsequently remained on the ground, perhaps never to return to her home, but you had learned to never say never.
