(Unloosed) Mélisande, Demon Within

Lore[]

Awakened, Mélisande did as the demons commanded and returned to her parent. When the mother saw the horns sprouting from the crown of her daughter's head and leathery wings growing from her back, she was filled with despair. "You would attempt to seal away one as powerful as I with a mere trinket?" the daughter laughed as she seized her mother's head between her talons. Mélisande mother was overcome with grief, but she gently whispered her child's name. "Now, now, is it not your wish to die in your child's arms?" was her daughter's cruel response.

Name origin[]

Mélisande is a French variant of an English feminine name Millicent, meaning "hard worker", that has been in use since the Middle Ages. Old French form Melisende derived from Old High German Amalasuntha, Amalaswintha, from the Germanic roots amal "work" and swinth "strength".

The name was popularized by Pelléas and Mélisande (1893), a popular symbolist play by Maurice Maeterlinck about the forbidden, doomed love of the title characters.
