Though Xing Xing did not heed the mystic's direct commands, he was not cruel enough to abandon her. Instead, he treated her as his progeny, schooling, feeding, and playing with her. When there were undoubtable signs of maturity both physical and mental, he was greatly impressed. Not by the fact that an undead jiangshi was miraculously able to grow, but that he had raised Xing Xing to be strong, wise, and kind.

A jiangshi is a reanimated corpse in Chinese legend, which moves around by hopping with its arms outstretched, and kills living creatures to absorb their life force.
