Having attempted to toy with Hercules, King Eurystheus was quite surprised when the hero actually returned on his orders with the Nemean Lion. Rather than give Hercules his next task, the King set off to purge the land of monsters himself. He felt that he must prove himself a greater man than Hercules or risk losing his status as a ruler.
