Princesses Eteocles and Polynices of Thebes formed an oath to exchange rulership annually. However, Eteocles who first took the throne refused to relinquish it to her sister and instead exiled her. Polynices then wed the prince of Argos and invaded her homeland to reclaim it. To aid in this, she had found seven tested champions to raid Thebes' seven gates. Hippomedon was one of those generals.
