Long ago, the heaviest sword the world had even known was created at the request of a war god. Though it brought him countless victories, he was eventually defeated, and the weighty blade's fall pierced through the underground. The deep crevice that formed became known as the netherworld, and a thousand years later, its demonic residents crawled out with the intent of spreading destruction.

In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was punished by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill only for it to roll down every time it neared the top, repeating this action for eternity. Sisyphean thus describes tasks that are both laborious and futile.
