With Esmeralda's spell, the retention of youth allowed the retention of love, and vice versa. While it may have seemed as overly convenient, it did not affect the emotion's intensity. She could never allow romance to become habitual, lest she lose her ardor and render her magic ineffectual. Devoted though she was, stoking the fires of passion on a nightly basis took no small amount of effort.
Esmeralda is a fictional character in Victor Hugo's 1831 novel Notre Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame).
